The Long Island Rail Road’s latest electric rolling stock, the M9, is a modern, sleek design by Ken Okuyama and manufactured by Kawasaki. This fleet of 200 cars entered service in September 2019, enhancing the existing Metropolitan-class trains. Like its predecessors, the M9 measures 85 feet in length and 10 feet 3 inches in width. Powered by the railroad’s 750-volt system, the cars can operate on voltages ranging from 400 to 950 volts DC. Each car is equipped with two Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units on the roof, with electric floor strip heaters providing additional warmth. The HVAC system automatically maintains the car’s interior temperature for optimal comfort. The M9s are designed to run in married pairs (A car and B car), connected by a semi-permanent, slack-free drawbar at the B end. An automatic mechanical/electric coupler at the F end allows multiple pairs to be linked into longer trains. Each married pair is capable of independent operation in either direction. Typical train configurations range from two to fourteen cars, but in emergency situations, up to twenty-eight cars can be coupled together. Each M9 car delivers approximately 1,100 horsepower, thanks to a Mitsubishi silicon carbide IGBT system. With a top speed of 100 mph and a service ceiling of 80 mph, the M9s offer reliable and efficient performance. Compared to the older M7 models, the M9s are slightly heavier. A cars weigh around 130,351 pounds, and B cars weigh 132,285 pounds, compared to the M7s’ A car at 128,300 pounds and B car at 125,300 pounds. More in our Part 2 #lirr #mta #m9railcar

A welcome party was held at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, where Ken Okuyama took the stage as a speaker. As the creator of “TRAIN SUITE Shikishima,” he was surely able to share some behind-the-scenes stories that only he could tell. We hope that the “DEEP EXPLORATION” tour beginning today will create great memories for the special guests.

奥山が客員教授を務める、東北芸術工科大学で開催される市民向けクリエイティブ講座「夏芸大」にて講演を行いました。
市民の方、学生も含めて多くの方にお集まり頂き、中山ダイスケ学長とのトークも交えながら日本・地域のものづくり、職人技、山形でつくるKen Okuyama Carsのお話もさせて頂きました。
参加者からも多くのご質問などを頂き大盛況のうちに幕を閉じました。ご参加頂いた皆様ありがとうございました。

Ken Okuyama gave a lecture at “Natsu Geidai,” a creative workshop for the general public held at Tohoku University of Art and Design, where he serves as a visiting professor.
A large audience, including members of the public and students, gathered for the event. He spoke about Japanese and regional craftsmanship, artisanal skills, and the Ken Okuyama Cars project being developed in Yamagata, interspersing his talk with a discussion with University President Daisuke Nakayama.
The event concluded on a high note, with many questions from the participants.
