Architecture of Culture (AOC) was launched with the Echoes of Alchemy exhibition at Milan Design Week 2023. The exhibition explored the four Emirati landscapes: Palm Oasis, Seascape, Mountain scape, and Desert scape.

Visitors were guided through the journey of crafts, beginning with raw materials and moving to traditional practices, contemporary interpretations, and finally to innovative products created from experimental design recipes. These works were the outcome of the x AUS research fellowship.

Within this narrative, hikma rituals offered its contribution to the Palm Oasis through the Date Palm Fruit and Pollen chapter, illuminating the enduring resonance of this tree as both a source of sustenance and a symbol of cultural continuity. Photo by .menghi

Third field trip complete — near Mleiha, where the desert’s spring offerings welcomed us with blooming Arta (Calligonum comosum) and Ghaf (Prosopis cineraria) in flower. As part of our collaborative research project with the Irthi Council on Edible Flora of the UAE, we’re exploring the properties of native plants traditionally used across the region.

Each plant part is carefully collected for further study — to be dried, powdered, and documented. Alongside this, we’re developing detailed monographs that trace their botanical characteristics, traditional uses, and cultural significance across time.

Arta’s twig-like stems and delicate blooms speak to its desert resilience, while Ghaf — the UAE’s national tree — offers a layered pharmacopeia through its leaves, bark, flowers, and pods. Every step of the process is rooted in care, memory, and respect for the land.
