Hearing loss can often be attributed to aging, known as presbycusis. This gradual decline in hearing ability can make it more challenging to hear important information, engage in social interactions, and maintain safety. If you frequently ask others to repeat themselves, struggle to hear in noisy environments, or find yourself increasing the volume on the TV or radio, it's a good idea to have your hearing evaluated.

Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength that begins in your mid-30s and speeds up after age 65 for women and 70 for men. While this decline cannot be fully prevented, strength training can help slow it down and reduce fall risk. Sarcopenia also affects bone density, leading to osteoporosis, which makes bones more fragile and prone to fractures. Women should get a bone density test at age 65 or earlier if at high risk, while men at high risk should consult their doctor. Managing osteoporosis involves medication, weight-bearing exercise, proper nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments such as avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a popular diet trend where food intake is limited to a specific time window each day, often promoted for weight loss and other health benefits. However, a recent study published by the American Heart Association on March 18, 2024, raises concerns about its safety. The research, involving 20,000 US adults with an average age of 49, found that people who restricted their eating to an eight-hour window had a 91% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who ate over a 12-16 hour period. Participants with existing cardiovascular conditions had a 66% higher risk of death from heart disease or stroke. Additionally, those with cancer who ate over a 16-hour window showed a lower risk of dying from the disease. Despite these findings, the study's reliance on self-reported dietary information and lack of consideration for other health factors mean the results are not definitive. Nonetheless, the study suggests caution before adopting an intermittent fasting regimen.

Bipolar risk doubles before menopause - study
A Cardiff University study of over 128,000 UK women found that the risk of developing bipolar disorder more than doubles during perimenopause, with a 112% increase in cases, and clinical depression rises by 30%. The study highlights the significant impact of hormonal changes during this period on mental health, potentially triggering severe illness in women without prior issues. Published in Nature Mental Health, the research underscores the need for better understanding and early intervention to support women facing mental health challenges during perimenopause.
