PS - none of these women are doing more than you. Most are doing considerably less. That’s the whole difference, and it took me a while to be able to say it that plainly.

There was a whole era where travelling with them meant fighting a stroller that folded like it required me looking manual like it was my first time. Snapping at Lav over something that was never actually about Lav. A hundred wants before we even reached the gate. Someone always needing attention the second someone else got it. “Are we there yet” before the plane had left the ground. Praying nobody needed the bathroom on a 45-minute flight. Praying nobody kicked the seat in front.

Now they carry their own bags. Nobody asks me for anything.
To the mums still in it: I won’t tell you to savour every moment. I embraced each season as it came and I don’t miss the stroller. But I’ll be honest, there’s a strange sadness in watching them need you less. That’s the catch. You raise them to be independent, and then they are.

The hard part ends. What replaces it is quieter, and complicated in its own way.

So if you’re in the thick of it … stroller in one hand, snacks in the other, praying nobody needs the loo mid-flight, do the best you can with the day you’re in. That’s genuinely enough.
