Pony Club Australia lets goooo, with the thoughtful posts and considerations around horse welfare 👏🏼

WHIPS, WELFARE & HOW HORSES LEARN 🐴 World Horse Welfare has released a new educational resource inviting riders to pause and reflect on an important question: Do I need to carry or use a whip at all?

The guide focuses on learning theory, correct timing, and using the least amount of pressure necessary, while being clear that whip use must never cause fear, pain or confusion — and must never be used in anger or as punishment.

The resource includes expert contributions from Dr Andrew McLean, CEO of Equitation Science International - ESI and Patron of Pony Club Australia, and aligns closely with Pony Club Australia’s Horse Welfare Policy and evidence-based approach to training.

It’s designed as a conversation-starter, encouraging riders, parents and coaches to think critically about their aids, their timing, and their horse’s experience.

📌 Links to both the World Horse Welfare guide and the PCA Horse Welfare Policy are in the comments.

This year I’m committing to learning, unlearning, and relearning.
Especially when it comes to my seat.

I want to develop a more classical riding position and a deeper understanding of how my body communicates with my horse. Not just riding better, but riding with more awareness and responsibility.

Finn is a sensitive guy, I’m so proud of him for tolerating me while I flap about, experiment, reset, and try again. These little moments of improved communication remind me why this work matters.

Change is incredibly hard but Finn and I will not miss my 90’s pony club kid, chair seat 🤝🏻
