The name “beetroot red” is designed to make you think it’s just beet juice, when in reality, this new FDA-approved food coloring contains zero actual beets.

The FDA just approved the use of this genetically modified dye in your food while still claiming “No Artificial Colors” on the front of the package. Here’s how they’re pulling off this clean label trick: Phytolon (the Israeli biotech company that created the coloring) inserts beet DNA sequences into baker’s yeast through precision fermentation, then feeds the modified yeast sugars until it secretes red pigment in steel tanks.

The real kicker comes with the carrier agents needed to stabilize this liquid dye. They’re using maltodextrin and gum arabic, both gut disruptors, but because the FDA classifies these as “incidental additives” they’re completely exempt from ingredient label disclosures. You’ll consume these chemicals without ever even knowing they’re there.

This approval came after an only 90-day safety study (ON RATS), despite heavy public opposition. The regulatory process shows exactly why we need to stop depending on artificial enhancement of our food entirely, because the system consistently prioritizes industry profits over transparent labeling and long-term safety.
