We’re incredibly proud to see our First Nations Cultural Guide, Dive Instructor and Master Reef Guides , Quinn Ross-Passi, featured in White Spark Pictures’ immersive virtual reality experience, Life in the Great Barrier Reef.🪸
Filmed across some of the Great Barrier Reef’s most spectacular locations, including our very own Reef Magic Pontoon in Gunggandji Sea Country, the experience immerses audiences in the beauty, diversity and significance of this World Heritage-listed ecosystem. Through groundbreaking 8K 360° underwater cinematography with our good mate Richard Fitzpatrick ACS , viewers witness incredible moments such as rare dolphin behaviour, coral spawning and thriving reef ecosystems from an entirely new perspective.
Quinn’s passion for sharing the stories of Sea Country and advocating for the Great Barrier Reef makes him an incredible ambassador for both culture and conservation. Alongside scientists and fellow reef stewards, his contribution helps audiences connect with the reef through the knowledge, stories and perspectives of Traditional Owners.
Life in the Great Barrier Reef is currently showing at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra and the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle.
Congratulations, Quinn . We couldn’t be prouder to see you sharing your knowledge, culture and passion for Sea Country with audiences from around the world. 🩵

That’s a wrap on our CCIP fine-scale juvenile Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (CoTS) monitoring program! 👏… for now 👀
Over the past few months, we’ve brought together tourism operators and Traditional Owners to build a stronger early warning system for future CoTS outbreaks on the Great Barrier Reef. 🪸
Together, we trained:
🪸 Six tourism operators across Great Adventures, Passions of Paradise and Down Under Cruise and Dive.
🪸 Eight Traditional Owners from Malu Ventures, combining fine-scale monitoring with the invaluable knowledge and cultural connection of Sea Country.
This program highlights the important role tourism operators play as the eyes and ears of the Reef, working alongside Traditional Owners whose deep connection to Sea Country brings valuable knowledge and perspective to reef stewardship. Together, these partnerships are helping strengthen the future of reef monitoring and protection.

*This project is part of the CoTS Control Innovation Program Bridging Phase, funded by the Australian Government Reef Trust, the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, in collaboration with the Reef Authority, Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, Yirrganydji Aboriginal Corporation and Gunggandji Aboriginal Corporation.
As part of our Tourism Reef Protection Initiative.
Earlier this month, we were joined by the incredible Bonnie from Maribyrnong College in Victoria for a week of work experience.
What a week she had, learning from our knowledgeable Marine Biologists across our four Reef Unlimited 🪸💦 Cairns experiences. She got to conduct guided snorkel tours, get hands-on in active conservation during a Reef Recovery Day, and even have a manta ray encounter, just as she was hoping for! (Lucky Aaron was on that day 🤣)
We love hosting work experience students in the world’s greatest classroom, the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, and hopefully inspire the next generation of reef stewards.
Bonnie’s enthusiasm and passion for the ocean was infectious and we wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours and hopefully will see her back on the GBR one day! 🩵

Here’s a sneak peek at just some of the incredible encounters we’ve had during the first week of Cairns Whale Watching! 🐋
These humpback whales undertake an annual round-trip migration of around 20,000 km, from their southern feeding grounds around Antarctica to the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef to mate and give birth, making it one of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom.
Whether you’re an avid wildlife photographer or simply love capturing the magic, your photos can help our marine biologists identify individual humpback whales by matching the unique patterns on their tail flukes, contributing to valuable long-term research. Prefer to sit back, relax and enjoy the show? Our onboard photographers from Stuart Ireland have you covered, with incredible professional images of your encounter available to purchase.
The whales have already made the journey… now it’s your turn! Join us aboard Cairns Whale Watching and experience the magic of humpback season from the best seat in the house, right here in our own backyard. 🐋🩵

Cairns Whale Watching has officially kicked off for another incredible season! 🐋🎉
After an incredible season last year, we’re going even bigger in 2026, collecting more whale behaviour and identification data than ever before. And the best part? You can help!
Love photography or enjoy recording wildlife observations? Join our citizen science program onboard and contribute to real whale research on the Great Barrier Reef, all while witnessing these breathtaking animals in the wild.
And who knows… maybe you’ll be the one to spot the elusive Migaloo! With a recent potential sighting off NSW, we’re keeping our eyes peeled to see if Australia’s famous white humpback makes another visit north. 👀🤍
We can’t wait to share another unforgettable season filled with incredible whale encounters, fascinating facts, terrible whale impersonations, and meaningful data, onboard Cairns’ only dedicated whale watching tour.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to spend a Reef Education day with Cultural Guide Jed… well, it’s deadly! 🙌
Our Reef Education days are designed around your curriculum and can be tailored to include meaningful cultural connections with our First Nations Cultural Guides. 🪃
Through storytelling, art, music, and hands-on activities, students gain insight into knowledge that has been passed down through countless generations. As the first stewards of the Great Barrier Reef, our Cultural Guides also share how Traditional Ecological Knowledge and modern science can work hand in hand to better understand, monitor, and protect this incredible ecosystem for future generations.🪸🫶🏽

When you’ve just finished hyping up the guests on your guided snorkel tour about the vacuum cleaners of the reef… the humble sea cucumber. 🥒
…only to watch a Titan Triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) make off with one like it’s a forbidden midnight snack. 😂
Titan Triggerfish are opportunistic feeders, and this one definitely saw an opportunity and swam off with it. While they’re best known for crunching through hard-shelled prey like sea urchins, crabs and molluscs, they’ll happily take advantage of an easy meal when it presents itself.
Then, just when we thought the show was over, an Orange-lined Triggerfish (Balistapus undulatus) arrived to clean up the leftovers, proving that on the reef, nothing goes to waste!
