Emmett Technique
The Chameleon approach to body therapies. These are overlapped together at specific junctions where each one can and will influence the other.

Helping people create change in their bodies, minds and lives. ✨ Cairns-based muscle and body release for pain relief and flexibility, Access Bars® sessions and classes, online conversations, author, speaker and curious thinker. Emmett Technique is a safe and simple muscle release therapy developed by Remedial Therapist Ross Emmett. It is used to address pain and discomfort, improve body movement and can restore a positive emotional state. Description of the principle behind the Emmett technique

Emmett Technique is a special form of body therapy that involves application of light finger pressure at specific points. These are in sequences that enable gentle releases for common problems which include neck, shoulder and back pain. Techniques derived from Ross's observation skills that are also integrated within the treatment to encourage homeostasis. Emmett Technique can be used as an effective adjunct to enhance the treatment value of other types of muscle release and neuro-musculoskeletal therapies, for example: Massage, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy or may be used as an effective therapy on its own. Accurate and fast assessment of imbalances present in the body are an integral feature of this technique. The therapy addresses tissues that may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints, or other connective tissue (fascia), as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Critical Point Analysis

In the science of Critical Point Analysis it is identified that in any highly complex system there is a specific, critical point at which the smallest input will result in the greatest change, where the least force exerts the greatest effect (for example a light touch on a small cog can halt the largest engine). It is with this understanding that the Emmett Technique influences the most complex system known – the human body. Working within this principle the Emmett Technique is able to affect two types of receptors, sensory and muscular, which may also activate an emotional state. The therapist is compared to a body electrician who has the power to locate these overlaps or re-set buttons. The muscle that has tripped out due to overuse or overload may only need a light pressure to re-set.

What if your body could move further without you stretching harder?

Most of us think that if something feels tight, we need to stretch it more.

Pull harder.
Hold longer.
Try to somehow convince the body to give us a few more centimetres. 😂

🌿 But myofascial release gives us another interesting possibility.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis looked at 10 randomised controlled studies involving athletes and found that myofascial release techniques had a moderate effect on joint range of motion compared with active or passive control groups.

In ordinary-person language…

People could move further after the intervention.

And THAT is the bit I find interesting.

Because sometimes when your body feels restricted, the answer may not simply be asking it to stretch further.

Sometimes changing what’s happening in the muscles and surrounding tissues can change how freely a joint is able to move.

Which is why one of my favourite things during a treatment is checking movement again.

Turn your head.

Lift your arm.

Bend.

Reach.

And see what your body has to say now. 😏

You don’t have to understand the anatomy to notice when something suddenly feels different.

What movement would you love to have a little more ease with?

What if gentle bodywork could change more than just a tight muscle?

There’s a whole system in your body quietly working in the background all day — helping regulate things like your heart rate, breathing and whether your body is more switched on or more settled.

It’s called your autonomic nervous system.

🧠 And this is where gentle bodywork gets really interesting.

A recent review looked at 50 controlled studies of manual therapy. With gentler, non-high-force techniques — particularly soft-tissue work — researchers found changes including a lower heart rate and changes in heart-rate variability associated with increased parasympathetic activity.

In much simpler words…

Gentle hands-on treatment can give your nervous system something to respond to as well as your muscles.

Which I find fascinating, because sometimes you get on the table thinking about the sore neck, tight shoulders or aching back…

…and somewhere along the way your whole body seems to go:

“Ohhhh. We can relax now.” 😂

Then you get up and see what you notice.

Maybe that’s why sometimes the first thing people say isn’t even about the muscle.

It’s simply…

“I feel so relaxed.”

What if a tight muscle isn’t just about the muscle?

Your muscles don’t make all the decisions on their own.

🧠 Your brain, spinal cord and nervous system are constantly taking in information from your body and adjusting how much tension your muscles use in response.

That means how you move, stand, work, exercise — and even the sensory information your body receives — can influence what your muscles do next.

And THIS is where gentle muscle release gets interesting.

If the nervous system is involved in deciding how much tension a muscle carries, what could change when we give the body a different piece of information?

Sometimes it doesn’t take more pressure.

Sometimes it takes a surprisingly small input… in the right place, at the right angle.

✨ And one of my favourite parts is the smile on someone’s face afterwards.

You’ve basically got to lie there, relax and enjoy being treated — with hardly any suffering involved 😂 — then you stand up, move your body and see what you notice.

Then most every time comes that little surprised smile.

“Oh… that’s different.” 😏

That moment never gets old.

Curious what your body might notice if you came in for an appointment? 🤔
