Sometimes we just need to stop and breathe.

Some children hold it together all day.

They follow the rules, manage the noise, cope with demands, suppress their feelings and keep going.

But all of that pressure has to go somewhere.

The coke bottle analogy can be a helpful way to understand After-School Restraint Collapse. During the day, the bottle is being shaken again and again. The child may look as though they are coping, but the pressure is building beneath the surface.

Then they get home.

They reach the place where they feel safest, the lid comes off, and everything that has been held in can spill out at once.

That might look like tears, anger, shouting, irritability, withdrawal, meltdown or complete overwhelm.

It is not about a child deliberately “saving their worst behaviour” for home.

It is often about what happens when a child can finally stop holding themselves together.
