Gemma came in today ready for a fresh start, so we carefully filed back the existing product, rebuilt the structure and shape, and then gave them a completely new look — soft pink, blue-grey, tiny florals and, of course, hand-painted ducks. 🐥🌸

This is exactly why I love nail art. You don't need long nails to have something detailed, fun and completely unique to you. 🖤

This is exactly why nail structure matters.

A nail doesn't become strong just because we pile more product onto it. The strength needs to be in the right place for the length and shape of the nail.

The apex and stress area are there for a reason — they're what help the nail cope with all the pressure we put our hands through every day.

And every client is different. Your natural nails, your chosen length and shape, and even what you do with your hands all affect how I build your nails.

Too little structure in the wrong place? Snap.

Loads of product everywhere? Congratulations, now we've got a chunky nail that can still break. 😂

The goal isn't thick nails. It's balanced nails.
Pretty comes afterwards. 💅🖤

Well… The Nail Nerd officially has a new home. 🥹💅

Today was my very first day working from Fringe Studio in Pāpāmoa — and after the absolute chaos of moving house, moving cities and relocating my entire little business, it felt SO bloody good to finally sit down at my desk and do what I love again. ❤️

I honestly couldn't have asked for a nicer first day.

I’ve been made to feel so incredibly welcome at Fringe, my little Nail Nerd corner is finally coming together, and I’m ridiculously excited about what I get to build here.

So this is it.

New home. New salon. New clients to meet. And a whole lot of nails waiting to be painted. 😂💅

The prettiest nail in the world is still a s**t nail if the structure underneath it is wrong. 😂💅

There. I said it.

We all love the fun bit — colour, glitter, chrome, crystals, tiny ridiculous paintings that require me to temporarily stop breathing… 😂

But before any of that goes on, I’m looking at something much less exciting:

Structure.

Where’s the apex? Where is this nail going to take the most pressure? Is there enough strength where it actually needs it? Is the nail balanced? And can I create that strength without building something that looks like a tiny pink doorstop attached to your finger? 😂

Because more product doesn’t automatically mean stronger nails.

The right amount of product, in the right place, does.

And “right” isn’t exactly the same for everybody. Your natural nails, length, shape and lifestyle all play a part in how I build them.

So while you’re sitting there choosing between seventeen almost-identical shades of nude…

I’m quietly doing nail architecture. 😂

Then we get to make them pretty.

Because beautiful nails are great. Beautiful nails that are actually built properly? Even better. 💅🖤

Apparently I’m incapable of giving myself a “simple” set. 😂💙💜

Started with this ridiculously good purply blue and then, naturally, things escalated.

Stripes. Skull and crossbones. A tiny little bow. Because why choose between cute and slightly unhinged when you can have both? 💀🎀

This is exactly the kind of nail art I love doing — a little alternative, a little unexpected, and completely individual.
