How to treat Onycholysis
(Separation of the nail from the nail bed)
Fingernail separation from the nail bed is a common condition called Onycholysis. It happens when the hard nail plate lifts away from the soft pink skin underneath. The lifted part often looks white or cloudy.
This usually happens after an injury. A sharp strike to the tip of the nail can force the pressure back into the delicate region behind the cuticle where the nail grows, causing a rupture. A serious strike can cause the entire nail to lift away of the nail bed, resulting in catastrophic nail loss.
Once a section of the nail lifts off, it will not reattach to the skin. The condition only resolves as a brand-new, healthy nail slowly grows out from the base. This process usually takes about 4 to 6 months for a fingernail.
A less serious strike can cause a fault line which will grow out with new nail pushing the old nail and fault line in front of it. Care is needed that the new nail does not overlay or underlay the old nail as it grows out.
If the area becomes sore, hot, red or yellow, it may be infected or if it goes dark or greenish, it may have developed a fungus. See your doctor or pharmacist for simple treatments.
I have experienced both the catastrophic loss and the fault line loss several times. The catastrophic loss is why I stopped doing acrylic nails over 25 years ago as the extreme toughness of acrylics means the nail simply will not break if hit and the pressure is always forced onto the nail bed itself.
As some of you may remember, I suffered a different form of Onycholysis several years ago when I burned my nail beds badly while curing gel extensions. Distracted, I didn’t notice the severe flash heat from the curing until I snatched my hand away in pain. The burns developed massive blisters which required drainage by a dermatologist as the pain was intense. Lesson? One thing at a time!
That was how I discovered press on nails and never looked back. Luckily, in that case, the blisters were professionally drained and resealed so well I could not find the tiny hole my doctor made. So I did not develop any infection. As the nails grow past the free edge, that is when you must be very careful as that is when the area now exposed can collect moisture, dirt, germs and fungus.
I jammed my right index finger several months ago and it made a break right across my finger at the cuticle! Ouch! It grew out without a problem and actually wearing press ons protected it really well until it got to the free edge. Oh wow! It separated right back under the nail, from the bruising, I expect, and I only had about 5mm of strong healthy nail to support the tips.
So how do you protect this area from becoming a problem? Firstly, use glue tabs from China/Korea from YUOK or similar companies who have developed nanotab technology and source their ingredients not from chemicals, but from plants that are naturally antibacterial and antifungal. These companies don’t advertise widely in Western markets (but they should!) but they add plants like milk thistle to create their nanotabs.
Secondly, use an edge sealing top coat under your nail along the free edge. Not only does this stop moisture and germs from entering the damaged area, it helps keep the glue tab from collecting dirt and grime.
Thirdly, it’s better to use short length press ons while your nails are growing out, but if you’re like me and really love long nails, get used to them lifting. You do NOT want to use harsh chemical glues on that growing area. They too will fail, and they will shred your delicate new nail when they do. Keep using the glue tabs and keep a strip of replacement tabs in your wallet. You will invariably put downward pressure on the tip of the nail and the cuticle end will come up. It’s the geometric principle of the lever. YUOK (or similar) glue tabs will hold the tip in place even when it loosens at the cuticle end.
I have to replace the glue tab every day or two because I simply cannot prevent myself from using my damaged right index finger for everything! Everything! Any other finger, less used, will cause less hassles as it grows out. But tabs are so easy to use and so inexpensive, I just replace the tab and TRY not to use the finger for several hours while it sets… again.
I’ll try to remember to take a photo of my naked finger when next I change my press ons. I hope this helps anyone who has Onycholysis.
PS. These tips are from Temu. I just wanted a break from using my own designs. 🌸 and I liked the flower. 🌸

I just saw yet another add on social media for Curvelife semi solid glue, crowing about how her nails are so strong it’s hard to get them off. Then she boasts about how they last for two weeks…
TWO WEEKS! Why would you want to be stuck with the same set of nails for two whole weeks! You wouldn’t wear the same dress for two weeks straight! You wouldn’t want to be seen at a social event wearing the same outfit TWICE in a row! So why cement your nails down to damaging old fashioned cyanoacrylate based glue that harms your nails and takes you hours to change your nails!
I use the modern nanotape style glue tabs from YUOK and YBJK (available from Temu, Shein, Amazon etc) It takes me less than 15 minutes to remove and replace an entire set of press on nails! And I can replace them as often as every three days if I want, or wear them for weeks. If a tab begins to loosens, you can carry on without fear of it falling off and deal with it when you have a spare moment, even hours later! Then it’s a matter of a few seconds to simply replace the offending tab and go on with your day. I’ve done it on a train, at a party or even at a banquet table… no mess, no fuss. Quick and clean.
The best part, and the pint being that I can change my nails to suit my outfit, not being tied down to a bland set of nails that has to go with every outfit I wear for the week. Last year I was on a cruise for 8 weeks and wore stunningly beautiful nails for the entire time, and oh the other ladies were so jealous!
So ditch the superglue based liquid and semisolid glues. Oh yes, no matter what the ads say, even Curvelife is just superglue with a few more plasticisers and nasty chemicals added. But YUOK (and YBJK) nanotabs are made using nature based ingredients! They are hypoallergenic, antibacterial and antifungal and do zero damage to either your nails OR the press ons, which can be reused again and again!
Start treating your nails as a fashion item, It’s the new way to have exciting and beautiful nails and give yourself a lot more FUN in your life!

It’s not common for me to come out and say something against a product, and I have to apologise to all of you for actually (almost) endorsing 3M’s version of my all time favourite tan-backed glue tabs. But I was wrong when I told you all that ALL tan-backed glue tabs are the same, and made with the same formula.
After extensive testing, on several individual batches of 3M’s tabs, purchsed through several independent retailers, I regretfully must give them a BIG THUMBS DOWN on both stick-ability and longevity. It is obvious when examining the tabs closely that the composition of the tabs is not the same as the ones manufactured by YUOK or YBJK in their Chinese factories. The YUOK formula is softer, has much greater sticking ability (nanotechnology) and longevity, and is formulated from natural ingredients that are naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial and anti fungal. The 3M ingredients appear to be no different to the old fashioned jelly tabs. The 3M tabs werent even sufficiently waterproof to withstand a hot shower.
Several of you will agree with this as I have fielded many complaints about 3M’s tabs. I apologise to you all. You were right!
I am not a chemist, and if I am wrong, let me know. But in the future, I will only be recommending YUOK or YBJK tan-backed glue tabs. I get mine from Temu. Also Shein. I know Curvelife is marketing the 3M tabs through Amazon. Have you had better results? Let me know.
