Carolyn’s hair is quite course and dense, her 10 month old dreads are still settling in. With lots of loops and lots of fly aways, we did a maintenance tidy up. Not too tight against the scalp because it’s just not necessary to put a client thru that pain. And left the ends alone for now. Another lovely morning chatting and locking. 😁♥️🎄

The lovely KJ struggles with lots of fly aways due to wearing a sleep apnoea mask at night. But doesn’t take long to sort out and tidy up. Spritz with lock tightening spray and ta-da!

CLIENT: “I hate having maintenance done. It hurts, I get a headache and can’t sleep properly for a week.” …I feel exactly the same!!!
Most Locktitions I know use a technique that is tantamount to felting. It is quite tight but it breaks the hair strands with every threading of the crochet hook through the dread. They also dread very tight against the scalp for longevity between maintenance. This is what causes pain, headaches and sleepless nights. A client told me she has to take Panadol for days after maint. Another told me his scalp was bleeding after maint. 😳 Lastly a client tried to brush out her dreads but the hair was all brocken right up to her regrowth…
That is completely unnecessary.
The method I use is designed to not break the hair strands at all. The hair is pulled in loops up into the dread so that if you ever want to brush them out you still have hair!! It also makes the dreads much softer to the touch and not prickly against your skin.
I also don’t dread close to the scalp unless my clients wants it. It is unnecessary and can damage your scalp irreparably. (I was a hairdresser in a previous life)
So please, talk to your locktition, ask them to dread further away from your scalp. As for methodology, if you can get to me, I can give you pain free, healthy, happy maintenance. ♥️♥️

Do your dreads get heavy when they are long? YEP! But I wouldn't have it any other way. My hair is really fine and for years I just tied it up in a lank pony tail. Boring.
Dreads were the best choice EVER.💚
