πHere is a saddle gullet I recently had to change.
π₯The alarming aspect? This is not an unusual occurrence. Inconsistent gullets are a significant issue within the industry.
π₯When replacing your gullet, ensure you check the one you've just removed to avoid installing the same size or one that's too wide/narrow, thereby exacerbating the problem.
Saddle pictured is less then 6 months old with a set of gullets that came directly from the manufacturer! ππ« π³

Beyond the Wither: Why Your Saddle's Rear Panel Angles Are Crucial! π΄π
We talk a lot about how the front of the saddle fits the wither and shoulderβand rightly so! But what about the back? The rear panel angles of your saddle are just as vital, and often the unsung heroes (or culprits!) of your horse's comfort and performance.
Think of the rear panels as the 'rear end' of the saddle's support system. Their angle needs to perfectly mirror the unique slope and muscle development of your horse's back as it transitions towards the loin and hindquarters. This isn't about how long the panels are, but precisely how they "sit" on that final portion of the weight-bearing area.
The Impact of Mismatched Rear Angles:
π Too Steep/Pinched:If the rear panels angle too sharply downwards or inwards, they create a pinching effect on the muscles. This can severely restrict your horse's ability to engage their hindquarters, lift their back, or round over fences. Imagine wearing a shoe that's too tight at the heelβit's just uncomfortable and hinders movement. You might see your horse hollow its back, resist upward transitions, or even become "cold backed."
π₯΄ Too Flat/Open: Conversely, if the rear panels are too flat or open for your horse's specific shape, the saddle can lose stability at the back. This can cause the cantle to drop too low, potentially putting undue pressure on the sensitive lumbar region or even the sacroiliac joint. It might feel like the saddle is "spreading" or isn't truly secure, affecting your balance and your horse's comfort.
Why This Matters:
Correct rear panel angulation ensures consistent, even pressure distribution over the entire weight-bearing surface, right to the very end. This allows your horse to:
πͺ Engage their Core: Freely lift their back and use their abdominal muscles for strength and power.
π Move Freely from Behind: Step under themselves, propel forward, and achieve natural gaits without restriction.
π Maintain Comfort: Avoid painful pressure points that lead to muscle soreness, white hairs, or behavioral issues.

Saddle fit can be affected by a large variety of factors! Educating yourself on these factors and what may contribute to shifts in your horseβs condition and behavior is an essential part of ensuring their saddle fits regardless.

On the Trail: Saddle Fit Matters More Than You Think! π΄π²
Hitting the trails is fantastic for both you and your horse, but did you know your saddle's fit is even *more* crucial when you're out and about? π€
Unlike arena work, trail riding involves varied terrain, longer durations, and often more dynamic movements like climbing hills or navigating uneven ground. An ill-fitting saddle can quickly cause rubs, pressure points, and discomfort that might be minor in a short schooling session but become excruciating over miles.
Why proper fit is critical on the trail:
Preventing Pain & Injury:
Uphill climbs shift saddle pressure to the wither/shoulder, while downhill descents push it back. A saddle that's too narrow or wide, or unbalanced, will create painful hot spots and rubs, leading to soreness, white hairs, and even serious back issues for your horse. π€
Ensuring Comfort & Endurance:
A well-fitted saddle allows your horse to use their back effectively, move freely, and breathe easily, improving their stamina and willingness to go the distance. ποΈ
Maintaining Safety:
An unstable or uncomfortable saddle can cause your horse to buck, trip, or act out, potentially compromising your safety on challenging terrain. β οΈ
Enhancing the Experience:
When your horse is comfortable, they're happier, more relaxed, and more enjoyable to ride. This makes your trail adventures truly rewarding! π
Before your next trail excursion, take a moment to consider your saddle's fit. A professional saddle fitter can assess your saddle on your horse, ensuring it's optimized for the demands of the trail. It's an investment in your horse's well-being and your shared enjoyment of the great outdoors! π

Don't wait until your horse shows signs of discomfort. Proactive saddle fitting is key to their well-being!
π’ FOUNDATION FIRST: The REAL Secret to Your Horse's Success! π’
It's tempting to think, "I'll get the saddle properly fitted once my horse gets fit" or "after they've built some muscle." But here's the crucial truth:
π₯ You NEED to get your saddle checked BEFORE you even truly start your ridden journey β BEFORE you build that muscle, and certainly BEFORE they're in peak fitness!
π€Think about it:
The Foundation is Everything: If you're building a house, you don't wait for the walls to go up before checking the foundation, do you? It's the same for your horse! Starting with an ill-fitting saddle creates a faulty foundation. Every step, every aid, every minute under saddle will be working against them, not with them.
Preventing Pain from Day One: Running without a good sports bra causes pain and discomfort for us ladies, right? Being ill-equipped causes pain in the long term for horses too! A saddle that pinches, bridges, or is too long will cause pain, restrict movement, and lead to compensatory muscle development β or worse, atrophy. Give them the chance to succeed by ensuring their comfort from the beginning!
Don't wait for problems to arise.
