The marriage study is particularly powerful: Ohio State researchers studied married couples after creating small controlled wounds. Couples were observed during supportive and conflict discussions; more hostile interactions were associated with slower wound healing and altered inflammatory responses.

A 2024 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology study reported that the more-stressed group showed significantly greater skin texture/fine-line severity—about 32.9% higher and stress hormones affected DNA integrity, extracellular-matrix synthesis, wound healing and the skin barrier in laboratory testing..
