If you’re pregnant, this is one to save for later 👀

One of the biggest questions towards the end of pregnancy is… how do I actually know when labour is starting?! And annoyingly, there isn’t always one obvious answer.

Some of these things can happen in the lead up to labour without meaning baby is coming right now.. but they can be signs that your body is getting ready!

😖 Contractions
Regular and increasingly intense contractions are a sign that labour is starting. You might feel them in your lower abdomen, back, or both! This is the perfect time to pop your TENS on

💦 Water breaking
For some people it’s the dramatic movie style gush. For others it’s more of a slow trickle. Though your waters don’t always break before contractions start!

🤢 Diarrhoea or nausea
A sudden digestive “clear out” can happen as your body prepares for labour.

🩸 Mucous plug
The mucous plug that has been sealing your cervix will come loose and you might notice some blood or mucous.

😬 Pelvic pressure
As your baby moves down into the birth canal, you might feel increased pressure or a feeling of heaviness in your pelvic area.

None of these on their own necessarily mean you are definitely in labour.. You might have a few, all of them, or barely notice anything before contractions properly begin..

And as always, if you’re unsure about symptoms please contact your maternity care provider.

What was your first “ohhhh I think this might actually be happening” sign?

🤍 NICU Awareness Month 🤍

This month we're thinking of every family whose story has included the NICU.

Those who are there right now. Those who've made it home. Those still processing a birth and postpartum that looked nothing like they imagined. And those whose baby never got to come home 💔

There are so many different NICU stories, and they all deserve to be seen and acknowledged.

Sending so much love to NICU families, this month and always 🫶🏻

f we were 36 weeks pregnant… here’s what we’d be doing 🩷

✨ Perineal massage ~ A few minutes a day can help things stretch more comfortably. Use good quality oil, go slow, & don’t push through discomfort.
✨ Raspberry leaf tea ~ 1 cup a day to help tone the uterus. It may support smoother contractions!
✨ Colostrum expressing ~ If your provider gives the go-ahead, this is a great time to start collecting. Especially helpful if baby needs extra support after birth.
✨ Test your TENS ~ Try the settings, place the pads, & show your birth partner how it works. Better now than mid-contraction!
✨ Finalise birth preferences ~ Think pain relief, skin-to-skin, cord clamping, & who’s in the room.
✨ Pack your hospital bag ~ For real this time! Include the snacks, the comfy un**es, and your TENS.
✨ Sort a plan for pets/kids ~ Know who’s on standby so you’re not sorting childcare mid-contraction.

Always check with your care provider before starting anything new, but if you’re feeling the urge to get things sorted, this is a pretty solid place to start 🤍

(Not medical advice ~ just the little things we’d be ticking off around now if we had the go ahead from our healthcare provider)

The euphoria when you finally do it, when you realise “holy sh*t, I actually did that!” is indescribable.

10 minutes ago you were climbing the bed, begging for help, so sure you couldn’t do it. And now you’re overcome with this incredible feeling of power you didn’t even know you had.

Truly euphoric. Truly life-changing.

There is nothing quite like it 😭

Midwife perspective 🤍

We asked Katie | UGC what she notices about women using a TENS in labour, and in her experience, they often seem to cope really well through contractions.

A TENS is simple, drug-free and, importantly, puts something in your hands that you can control as labour ramps up.

Hear what Katie | UGC has to say about using TENS for labour 👆

Here are five pain relief tools you can use during labour and birth.

So many of these can also be used in conjunction with each other and are great alternatives to an epidural or gas and air, or something to use before using an epidural or gas and air whilst you wait for them to be available.

Have you used any of these? What were your favourites?
