As promised, Electrolysis specialist Filomena Spierings from Derma Code has provided us with some facts about Electrolysis and hair!
Filomena is a Melbourne, Clinical practitioner who specialises in Electrolysis. Filomena has over 20 years experience in skin therapy & electrolysis, holds a Diploma in Electrology and has taught in the Beauty Therapy & Electrology industry for 15 years.
What is Electrolysis?
Developed by a physician, Electrolysis provides the best solution to the problem of unwanted hair regardless of hair color/type, skin colour, area of the body or face, gender, age or ethnicity. Unlike other hair removal methods, professionally performed Electrolysis eliminates unwanted hair – permanently. Electrolysis is the ONLY technology recognised by FDA as a permanent form of hair removal
Electrolysis is the permanent hair removal method using a probe and electrical device. The probe is inserted into the hair follicle and a small amount of electrical energy is discharged which destroys the hair growth tissue and the loosened hair is removed with tweezers. When done properly, the hair follicle is permanently destroyed.
Laser Hair Removal is Not Permanent
About lasers: w w w. fda.gov/Radiation-EmittingProducts/ResourcesforYouRadiationEmittingProducts/ucm252761.htm
Manufacturers may not claim that laser hair removal is either painless or permanent unless the FDA determines that there are sufficient data to demonstrate such results. Several manufacturers received FDA permission to claim, “permanent reduction,” NOT “permanent removal” for their lasers. This means that lasers will not result in a permanent removal of all hair. The specific claim granted is “intended to effect stable, long-term, or permanent reduction” through selective targeting of melanin in hair follicles. … Permanent hair reduction does not necessarily imply the elimination of all hairs in the treatment area.”
Over the past 10 years the arrival of lasers/IPL technology has been a revolution for hair removal. Many great results have been achieved. However one not so great consequence has been when these devises are used in hormonal areas such as chin, face ,neck and breast area. We are increasingly finding that these areas have a rebound stimulation. Constantly clients are reporting that after initially having a reduction in growth, they then find that there is actually more growth in these areas.
There are a couple of theories now explaining this . The most prominent theory is that dormant follicles( in these hormonal areas)in the skin that we are all born with but are not active are stimulated by these treatments. All follicles in our skin are present at birth some activate during our lifetime through hormonal stimulation and some remain inactive all our lives.
Therefore hormonal areas should not be treated with this technology.
Is all electrolysis the same?
There are three types, or modalities, of electrolysis used today - galvanic (current produces a chemical reaction of the salt and moisture in the skin tissue that damages the hair growth tissue), thermolysis ( produces heat to cause destruction of the hair growth tissue) and a modality that blends the two known simply as the Blend. They all result in effective permanent hair removal. The modality selected by the electrologist will depend on the information ascertained in the consultation.
Does electrolysis have any side effects on the skin?
Immediately following treatment, you may experience slight redness or tenderness which usually disappears in a couple of hours. There is very little risk of complication or serious skin irritation with electrolysis performed by a skilled electrologist. For the first 24 hours following treatment, it's best to avoid activity that could irritate hair follicles such as excessive sweating, swimming, tanning and prolonged sun exposure or non mineral make-up application.
What is involved in the consultation?
The initial consultation at Derma Code is free of charge and includes an explanation of the electrolysis process, what you can expect and aftercare protocol. You will also need to disclose any medical history that is appropriate and previous treatment of the area. This information will allow a treatment plan to be developed for your specific hair removal needs.
What does electrolysis feel like?
You'll probably feel a slight heat or stinging sensation. Discomfort is minimal for most people, but individual tolerances vary greatly. Some areas of the face and body are less sensitive than others.
How long will my electrolysis treatment take?
Depending on the area you want cleared, it could be 10 minutes for a small area to an hour for a larger area. Factors such as hair growth cycles, the quantity and structure of hair presented, previous use of temporary hair removal methods, ethnicity, hormone function, certain medications and stress influence the treatment program for each individual.
Are all hairs eliminated in one treatment or is regrowth to be expected?
The hair that is visible is not all the hair you have in a given area. Hair grows in cycles, that is why it requires a series of treatments to remove all hair from the different cycles.
The hair growth cycle is divided into 3 growth phases.:
The active growth phase is called anagen. In anagen, the papilla( the blood network providing nutrients for hair growth) and follicle are fully formed and functioning. This is where optimum damage to the follicle and papilla is achieved.
The next phase is the catagen phase, the cell division slows and the follicle begins to shrink upward. The follicle loses contact with the papilla (blood network)
In telogen phase, the follicle shrinks to one- third its original depth. This is the resting stage and the hair eventually falls out. Treatment in catagen and telogen phases allows some destruction to the follicle structure and therefore has an impact on future growth.
After a brief rest, the follicle re-enters the anagen phase and generates a new hair and follicle with the papilla reconnected. This process continues over and over for your en- tire lifetime.
Different areas of the face and body have different cycle lengths. Hair on the scalp remains in the anlagen stage for years whereas the chin area maybe closer to 4 months.
What can I do in between treatments if hair is visible?
Temporary methods of hair removal such as tweezing, waxing and threading may have an adverse affect on hormonal areas such as chin, face, neck, breasts. It has been found that the repeated pulling of hair in these areas cause the hair to begin to grow thicker. The soft vellus hair around these courser hairs are also waxed, tweezed and threaded in this process, causing them also to become thicker. This is why clients then notice an increase of growth in the area. In these temporary types of hair removal there is damage done inside the follicle. Our body is designed to send more blood to the area to heal the damage, This increase in nutrition promotes stronger growth to develop.
Therefore the only temporary measure that does not strengthen hair growth is cutting. You may cut hair back as often as need in between treatments. This does not tamper with the hair structure beneath the skin.
