📚 Book Week at Walky Talky Hub!

In honour of Book Week, our psychologist Lydia Cargeeg is sharing some of her favourite books — with a little something for everyone! 📖✨

For children, Lydia has chosen:
📕 Serious: What Do You Do With a Problem? — a beautiful book about facing challenges and learning to approach problems with courage.
📗 Silly: No One Really Knows a Cane Toad — because sometimes a book is just meant to make you laugh! 😂

And for the grown-ups:
📘 Serious: Mindsight by Dan Siegel — exploring the power of understanding our own minds and emotions.
📙 Silly: 488 Rules for Life by Kitty Flanagan — witty, irreverent and guaranteed to bring some laughs!

We love hearing what our team enjoys reading — and we’d love to know… what’s your favourite book? 💛📚

You’re already reading to your child… so why not make those 5 minutes count even more? 📚✨

This Book Week, we’re sharing 5 simple ways you can support your child’s language while reading together…without turning story time into a lesson!

💬 1. Pause
Give your child time to look, think and respond. You don’t need to fill every silence! A little pause gives them an opportunity to communicate.

👆 2. Point & name
Talk about what you can see in the pictures. “Look! A tractor!” “There’s the little girl!” This helps children connect words with what they see.

➕ 3. Expand
If your child says “dog”, you could say “Yes, a BIG dog!” or “The dog is running!” Repeat what they said and add a little more language.

🤔 4. Wonder together
You don’t have to quiz your child with lots of questions. Try making comments and wondering aloud: “I wonder where they’re going?” or “Hmm… I think he might be hiding!”

🔁 5. Repeat, repeat, repeat!
There’s a reason children want the same book again and again! Repetition helps children hear and practise new words, phrases and story language. So don’t worry if you’re reading the same favourite book for the 100th time. 😅

And remember, you don’t have to finish the book! For younger children especially, looking at the pictures, making sounds, talking about what you see or reading just a few pages can still be a wonderful language-building experience.

Most importantly, keep it fun. ❤️ There’s no “perfect” way to read with your child — sharing a book together is what matters.

📚 Happy Book Week from the Walky Talky team!

📚✨ Book Week 2026 is here! ✨📚

We’ve been getting into the Book Week spirit at Walky Talky, and our waiting room has had a little makeover! 📖💜

This year, we’re asking our clients and families to share their favourite book by writing it on a piece of our Book Week bunting. 🎨📚

We’re hoping that by the end of the week, these strings will be FULL of book recommendations from the wonderful families who visit us! 🥰

Because there’s nothing quite like discovering a new favourite book through someone else’s recommendation. ❤️

So, if you’re visiting Walky Talky Hub this week, make sure you add your favourite to the bunting!

What book would you add? 👇📚

🌟 Kids Who Can: Meet Blake!

This month we’re introducing 3-year-old Blake, who has been seeing our physiotherapist Natalie for the past six months to work on his gross motor skills, including running, jumping and climbing, as well as building confidence with new physical activities.

Blake loves setting up obstacle courses at Walky Talky, where he can explore climbing, jumping, balancing and other movement skills through play.

💜 Every child develops at their own pace, and we love creating opportunities for children to practise new skills in ways that feel fun, motivating and achievable. Go Blake! 👏

One of the skills we love seeing emerge before independent walking is rotation in standing 👣

In this video, Alison is encouraging baby H to rotate towards a toy while he is standing at a support surface.

This movement encourages the crossed abdominal muscles to work together, helping develop the core strength, postural control and balance babies need as they progress towards independent walking.

You’ll notice that baby H is still using his chest and tummy against the support for extra stability…and that’s completely okay! 💜

As babies become stronger and more confident, you’ll often see a progression towards:

✨ Less weight through the support surface
✨ Rotating further in standing
✨ Reaching and turning with one hand
✨ Moving between positions
✨ And eventually… those first independent steps! 👣

Every baby develops at their own pace, but these little movements are an important part of the journey towards walking.

We celebrated our annual Christmas in July (in August!) staff party on Saturday night. 🎄🎅

Our team went all out with costumes, with best dressed being awarded to Physio, Megan, who dressed as a Silent Knight and committed to not talking for the first 2 hours of the night!

We had team games (well done Team Shortbreads for winning 🏆), Bad Santa gift swapping, mulled wine, yummy food and lots of fun times!

We’re so grateful for our wonderful team and it was so lovely to be able to properly catch up outside of the days at the Hub!

Can you recognise the therapists behind their costumes??

Every. Damn. Night. 🤦‍♀️

If only they’d remember that they actually like bath time once they’re in!

Share this with a parent who’s also in the thick of it and send them a virtual hug and glass of wine 🍷 😂
