Does a good sunscreen have to be SPF 50+? Not necessarily.
This often surprises people, but the difference in UVB protection between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is much smaller than most people realise.
➖ SPF 15 filters around 93% of UVB rays
➖ SPF 30 filters around 97% of UVB rays
➖ SPF 50 filters around 98% of UVB rays
So why do many of the professional sunscreens we recommend in clinic have an SPF of 30?
Because when it comes to sunscreen, the formulation matters just as much as the SPF number. It's about protecting your skin while supporting the skin goals you're working so hard to achieve.
Can your makeup really count as sun protection? Sometimes it can, and Keanah explains how.
Guiya Minerals is a mineral makeup we stock at our Shellharbour clinic. Mineral filters sit on the surface of the skin and reflect UV, which means a mineral foundation can act as a layer of daily sun protection.
It tends to suit skin that finds heavier sunscreens difficult: reactive, sensitive or barrier-focused skin. One honest note: treat it as a top-up layer over your dedicated SPF, not a replacement for it.
Send us a message if you'd like to know whether it suits your skin, or ask us at your next visit.

SPF is about more than the number on the front.
Sun protection is essential, but the formulation behind that number matters just as much. At Skin Correctives, your sunscreen is the final step in a routine designed to support the barrier, calm inflammation, manage pigmentation and improve overall skin health.
A sunscreen can offer excellent UV protection, yet if the base is heavy, pore-clogging, heavily fragranced or unsuited to your skin type, it can work against everything else you are doing. The wrong formula may contribute to congestion, redness, irritation, dehydration or pigmentation that is harder to manage.
This is why we recommend specific SPF products rather than simply saying "wear sunscreen." We look for formulas that are broad-spectrum, photostable, comfortable enough to wear daily, supportive of barrier health and compatible with your treatment plan.
The right SPF protects your skin and supports your skin goals at the same time.

When most people think about protecting their skin, they think about SPF. It is the one we all know, and it matters, but it is not the whole picture.
Real skin protection tends to work on three fronts at once. SPF shields the surface from UV. A healthy barrier locks water in and keeps irritants out. Antioxidants work deeper, defending skin cells from the daily environmental stress that UV and pollution can cause.
The three support each other. Leave one out and the other two have to work harder to make up the difference. That is why we think of protection as a system rather than a single bottle.
Want all three working together? Give us a call and start building your protection routine.

We asked everyone on the team the same question: what's the one home skincare product you'd never skip in winter?
Four therapists, four honest picks.
Keanah chose Skin Rehab, a lovely winter addition that can help restore barrier and hydration lost to cooler weather and constant heating. It may relieve dryness, sensitivity and flaking, so you can keep using your actives without compromising your skin.
Lauren chose Anti-Wrinkle Retinox. It supports hydration and healthy cell turnover, and may help improve the look of uneven texture, tone, scarring and pigmentation.
Kayla chose Gly Bright Pads, gentle resurfacing and brightening that helps maintain hydration, smoothing and refreshing the complexion without over-stripping. Ideal for dullness and uneven tone in the cooler months.
Karen chose Intense Moisture, a favourite for mature skin. As we age, skin loses moisture more easily, especially with weather changes, air con and indoor heating. It can support the skin barrier and help reduce moisture loss, leaving skin feeling comfortable and nourished.
The common thread? Protect the barrier, and protect it daily. These are the products we stand behind because we use them ourselves, here in Shellharbour. Send us a message if you'd like help shaping your own winter routine.
An Illawarra winter is its own kind of test for the skin barrier.
Your barrier is the outer layer that holds water in and keeps irritants out. When cold air, wind, heating and hot showers draw moisture away, it can start to struggle, and it usually tells you in five ways.
Tightness can point to water loss. Stinging can mean the barrier is disrupted. Flaking often signals surface dehydration. Sudden sensitivity suggests it is no longer buffering irritants well. Dullness can be an uneven, dehydrated surface.
If you are noticing two or more, the answer is usually to simplify rather than add: gentle cleansing, hydration and barrier support, then reintroduce actives slowly. Send us a message if this sounds like your skin and you'd like to know where to start.

Here is one of the most common winter skincare mix-ups we see: the idea that a hydrating serum can replace your moisturiser.
They actually do two different jobs. A hydrating serum is water-binding, which means it draws moisture into the skin. A moisturiser is barrier-sealing, which means it locks that moisture in. Without the seal, the water you have just added simply evaporates.
This is why hydrated skin can still feel tight by the middle of the day in winter. The serum did its job, it just needs a moisturiser over the top to hold the result.
The fix is layering, not a stronger serum. Send us a message if you'd like help getting your winter routine in the right order.
