π€ Are Trigger Points Really the Problem?
If you've ever felt a painful "muscle knot" in your neck, shoulders, back, or hips, you've experienced what healthcare professionals call a trigger point.
For years, trigger points have been viewed as dysfunctional areas of muscle that need to be "released" to reduce pain.
But new research suggests something surprising:
π Trigger points may actually be your body's protective response.
Researchers propose that trigger points can develop when the body experiences **mechanical overload**βmore stress than tissues can comfortably tolerate.
Common contributors include:
π» Poor posture
π± Looking down at devices
ποΈ Heavy lifting
π Repetitive movements
πͺ Prolonged sitting
π Physical deconditioning
Rather than being the problem itself, trigger points may help:
β Limit movements that could aggravate tissues
β Increase stability around vulnerable joints
β Improve body awareness in overloaded areas
This may also explain why muscle knots often return after massage, stretching, or other treatments.
If the underlying causeβsuch as poor posture, weakness, movement restrictions, repetitive strain, or joint dysfunctionβisn't addressed, the body may recreate the same protective response.
The research also highlights that chronic pain is about more than muscles alone. Sleep quality, stress levels, physical activity, and nervous system sensitivity can all influence how pain develops and persists.
The takeaway?
π‘ Pain often has a purpose.
Instead of simply asking, "How do I get rid of this muscle knot?" it may be more helpful to ask, "Why did my body create it in the first place?"
At Health Wise Chiropractic, we focus on identifying the factors contributing to pain and dysfunction, helping patients improve movement, resilience, strength, posture, and overall functionβnot just temporarily relieve symptoms.

βοΈ Handwriting vs iPad Writing β Which Is Better For Your Neck & Posture?
As tablets, iPads, and digital note-taking become more common in schools, universities, and workplaces, researchers are starting to ask an important question:
Could digital writing be contributing to neck pain and poor posture?
A recent study comparing traditional handwriting with iPad writing found that tablet use increased:
β οΈ Neck bending
β οΈ Neck rotation
β οΈ Asymmetrical posture
β οΈ Cervical muscle strain
Researchers suggested prolonged tablet use may place greater stress on the cervical spine compared with traditional handwriting.
This is especially relevant for people dealing with:
β βText neckβ
β Headaches
β Shoulder tension
β Upper back stiffness
β Poor posture
β Reduced neck mobility
π² What is βText Neckβ?
Text neck refers to repetitive stress placed on the cervical spine from constantly looking down at phones, tablets, or laptops.
Over time, prolonged forward head posture may contribute to:
β’ Neck pain
β’ Muscle fatigue
β’ Joint irritation
β’ Tension headaches
β’ Postural dysfunction
At HealthWise Chiropractic Sunbury & Melton, we regularly see students, office workers, gamers, remote workers, and professionals experiencing posture-related neck strain from prolonged screen use.
π‘ The study also highlighted that traditional handwriting may promote:
βοΈ More stable neck posture
βοΈ Better fine motor control
βοΈ Improved hand-eye coordination
βοΈ Enhanced sensorimotor function
Simple tips to reduce tablet-related neck strain:
β
Raise screens closer to eye level
β
Take breaks every 20β30 mins
β
Avoid prolonged downward head posture
β
Support your arms while writing
β
Strengthen posture-supporting muscles
β
Alternate between handwriting & tablet use

π± Are Poor Posture Habits Causing Back Pain in Teenagers?
Back pain is no longer just an adult problem.
A recent study of adolescents aged 10β20 years found that **63% experienced back pain** and **56% experienced neck pain** within the previous three months.
With teenagers spending more time studying, gaming, scrolling and sitting than ever before, researchers wanted to understand what was driving these symptoms.
The surprising finding?
π« It wasn't screen time itself.
While over half of participants used smartphones or tablets for more than 4 hours per day, researchers found that **poor postureβnot total screen timeβwas most strongly associated with back pain.**
Common problem postures included:
π Hunching over schoolwork
π» Leaning forward at a laptop
π± Looking down at a phone for long periods
ποΈ Slouching on the couch
β©οΈ Sitting unevenly or leaning to one side
Students who regularly used flexed (slouched) sitting postures were significantly more likely to experience back pain than those who sat more upright.
Researchers also found:
β Girls reported higher rates of back pain than boys
β Poor posture while studying showed the strongest association with symptoms
β Slouched social sitting habits were linked to increased discomfort
β Modern sedentary lifestyles may be contributing to growing rates of spinal pain in young people
The good news? Posture-related habits can often be modified.
β
Encourage movement breaks every 30β45 minutes
β
Set up study spaces appropriately
β
Promote regular physical activity
β
Avoid prolonged periods in one position
At Health Wise Chiropractic, we regularly assess posture, spinal function and growth-related changes in children and teenagers across Sunbury and Melton.
If your child is experiencing ongoing back pain, neck pain or posture concerns, an assessment may help identify contributing factors and provide guidance to support healthy spinal development.

Ever feel like your lower back is doing all the heavy lifting? π₯±π₯
Many people visit us at Health Wise Chiropractic complaining of a stiff lower back or aching hips. But hereβs the secret: your hip and your spine are a package deal. When specialists talk about Hip-Spine Syndrome, they mean a literal chain reaction in your body. Because your hips, pelvis, and lower back work together for everyday movementsβlike putting on socks, sitting down, or bending overβa problem in one spot quickly forces the other to overwork.
Think of it this way: When your hips get stiff, your lower back has to compensate. π¬ What the science says:
Recent biomechanical research shows just how tightly linked they are. For every 1
β
your hip flexes, your lower back actually gets to relax and flexes 0.84
β
less! But if your hips are locked up from long days of sitting, your lower back takes the beating, leading to mechanical pain, stubborn muscle tightness, and recurrent stiffness.
