Breast massage shouldn’t hurt. 🤍

For years, many mums were told to “push harder” through blocked ducts and engorgement — but newer breastfeeding guidance is shifting towards a gentler approach.

Therapeutic breast massage focuses on supporting lymphatic drainage, reducing inflammation and helping milk flow more comfortably ✨

In our latest blog written alongside IBCLC Vanessa Le Page, we explore:
• What therapeutic breast massage actually is
• Why gentle techniques matter
• The role of lymphatic drainage in breastfeeding
• How warmth, movement and compression may support milk flow and comfort

Because when it comes to breastfeeding support, gentler is often better.

B***s are WILD! and kind of incredible.

Have you ever wondered what those little raised bumps are on your ar**la, it's likely you are talking about the Montgomery glands. They service a pretty important purpose. They secrete oils that help to protect and nourish your ni***es.

Sometimes they can look a little like a pimple but don't pick at them! Just leave them to do their thing.

Did you know that is what they were called?

We sometimes get asked about the Lactamo "difference". Lactamo is a world first in breastfeeding and is the ONLY product that harnesses the power of gentle breast massage with temperature, movement and compression specific to the elasticity of lactating breast tissue. Decades of research have shown that these 3 components have the power to proactively and reactively address common breastfeeding issues:
* Temperature - Lactamo has hollow surface lumps filled with gel that can be heated or cooled depending on your ever-changing needs.
* Movement - Using a rolling movement over the breast is aimed at stimulating milk production and flow, helping relieve swelling and pain, and helping fight off infection.
* Compression - Gentle compression helps to facilitate the movement of fluids in the breast to ease inflammation and aid in milk flow.
* Super soft and safe - As soft as a marshmallow, Lactamo is specifically designed for lactating breasts. Crafted from 100% medical silicone and filled with a non-toxic gel.

Thanks to for this beautiful image - we love hearing and seeing how Lactamo has supported you on your breastfeeding journey.

Mastitis – a word no breastfeeding mum wants to hear, yet it’s something many of us may encounter during our journey.

But what exactly is mastitis, and how can you recognise the signs early to prevent it from becoming a more serious issue?

Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that can sometimes lead to infection. It usually starts with a blocked duct, where milk flow becomes restricted and builds up behind the blockage, causing irritation and swelling.

If not treated promptly, this can lead to a more severe infection, leaving you feeling drained and in need of extra care.

So, what should you be looking out for? Here are some common signs of mastitis:

✨ Breast pain or tenderness: The affected area can feel sore, sensitive, or even painful to the touch. This pain may increase when feeding or expressing.
✨ Redness or warmth: The skin over the inflamed area might become red and feel hot. This redness often appears in a wedge-shaped pattern as the inflammation spreads.
✨ Swelling or hardness: The affected breast can feel swollen, firm, or have noticeable lumps due to blocked milk ducts.
✨ Fever and flu-like symptoms: Unlike a simple blocked duct, mastitis can cause systemic symptoms. You might experience a fever, chills, and feel generally run down, similar to having the flu.
✨ Decreased milk supply in the affected breast: As mastitis impacts milk flow, you might notice a temporary drop in your milk production on the affected side.

So, what can you do if you suspect mastitis? Early treatment is key. Continuing to breastfeed or express milk is essential. Light lymphatic drainage, gentle cooling and staying hydrated are also helpful.

Lactamo is an excellent tool here – its soft design supports lymphatic drainage and helps ease inflammation.

Remember, mastitis can escalate quickly, so always consult a healthcare professional if your symptoms worsen or don’t improve.

Want to know why Lactamo exists?

We asked founder Etta to share her story, “I struggled with all of my breastfeeding journeys and was disappointed with lack of solutions and support.

I assumed that my struggles were just my personal experience. I assumed that not many mums could be finding it difficult, given that there was this lack of solutions and support. I was shocked to understand that it wasn’t just me: 92% of women report struggling with breastfeeding.

So in 2019 put together a team of experts in breastfeeding, health and medical technology, the team drew on decades worth of research which has for a long time shown conclusively that there are 3 key components for the resolution of the common breastfeeding problems: temperature movement and compression.

The benefits of bringing these together in breast massage are profound, and there have been some really incredible studies demonstrating the benefits of this trifecta.

After 3 years of research and development, Lactamo was launched. It’s a clinically validated, evidence based breastfeeding solution for common breastfeeding problems. Made of medical grade silicone, with hollow surface lumps, filled with gel that can been heated and cooled.

Lactamo supports, promotes and facilitates breastfeeding with a strong focus on therapeutic breast massage, lymphatic drainage and blood flow.”

Needless to say we all get pretty excited when we hear directly from mothers and health care professionals about how much Lactamo is helping.

Lactamo exists because we want to give you a better breastfeeding experience.

The human breast is home to a finely tuned ductal network that plays a vital role in breastfeeding. This image, taken from the International Breastfeeding Journal, is Cooper's illustration of the ductal system of the lactating breast. It shows the breast of a lactating woman who died and was injected with coloured wax and dissected.

This shows the complexity of the milk ducts as they branch through the breast tissue, responsible for transporting milk from the mammary glands to the ni**le. While this network is incredibly efficient, it is also sensitive to inflammation. When inflammation occurs, the ducts can narrow, leading to blocked milk flow, discomfort, and in more serious cases, conditions like mastitis.

Inflammation of the ducts is a common issue. Left unchecked, it can disrupt milk flow and cause significant pain. Early, gentle intervention is key.

That’s where Lactamo comes in. Designed specifically to support the breast’s natural function, Lactamo provides gentle therapeutic massage that helps reduce inflammation and promotes healthy milk flow. By addressing inflammation and relieving swelling, Lactamo helps prevent more severe complications, allowing you to continue breastfeeding comfortably.

Breastfeeding is not always straightforward, but with the right support, you can prevent and respond to common breastfeeding challenges. Lactamo is here to help you through every step of your breastfeeding journey.

Did you know that the lymphatic system plays a key role in breastfeeding?

While it often doesn’t get the attention it deserves, the lymphatic system helps drain excess fluid and reduce inflammation, which is essential for maintaining healthy milk flow and preventing common breastfeeding issues like engorgement and blocked ducts.

Supporting lymphatic flow can make a big difference in breast health, especially during the early postpartum period when swelling and inflammation are common. Feeding regularly, staying hydrated, and using tools like Lactamo to enhance lymphatic circulation can go a long way in keeping congestion at bay and preventing discomfort.

Preparing for Postpartum - birth normally gets all of the attention but we are firm believers in spending time to prepare for postpartum!

Here are 5 supportive steps to help you get ready for the arrival of your little one:

Open Conversations with Your Partner: Discuss with your partner how they can best support you during and after pregnancy. From emotional support to sharing household responsibilities, clear communication sets a strong foundation.

Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power! Attend prenatal classes, read books, or join online forums. Understanding what to expect can ease anxieties and empower you for the journey ahead.

Meal Prepping: Stock your freezer with healthy, easy-to-reheat meals for the postpartum period. Having nutritious food on hand will be a lifesaver when you're busy with the baby.

Set Up a Support System: Identify friends, family, or professional services that can offer help when needed. Knowing you have a support network can provide immense peace of mind.

Create a Comfortable Nest: Organise your home to make it as comfortable and functional as possible for when the baby arrives. From setting up the nursery to rearranging your living space, a cozy environment will make the transition smoother.
