March is Lymphoedema Awareness Month. Like, comment on or share our posts to raise awareness!
Fact 29: Lymphatic System Function
• The lymphatic system is our body’s ‘sewerage system’.
• It maintains fluid levels in our body tissues by removing all fluids that leak out of our blood vessels.
• The lymphatic system is important for the optimal functioning of our general and specific immune responses.
• The lymph nodes monitor the lymph flowing into them and produce cells and antibodies which protect our body from infection and disease.
• The spleen and thymus are lymphatic organs that monitor the blood and detect and respond to pathogens and malignant cells.
• The lymphatic system plays an important role in the absorption of fats from the intestine.
• When the lymphatic system is not formed well or has been damaged by surgery, radiotherapy or tissue damage, a swelling of a part of the body may occur (most commonly the legs or arms). When this swelling lasts more than about three months it is called lymphoedema.
• When it’s not functioning well the lymphatic system may have a role in obesity, Crohn’s disease and other disorders.

Fact 24: Lymphoedema Early Warning Signs

Early warning signs that an individual may be developing lymphoedema may include transient swelling, aching, heaviness, stiffness, limitation of movement, tightness or temperature changes of a limb or other region of the body.

Clothing, jewellery or shoes may feel tighter. If you are concerned or consider yourself 'at risk' and notice any of the above symptoms, consult a medical practitioner with experience in lymphoedema, for an assessment and accurate diagnosis. Early diagnosis can reduce the impact of the disorder for sufferers.

Fact 23: Travelling with lymphoedema
Long car trips or air travel present several considerations for those with or at/risk of lymphoedema. What works for you?
General hints to help reduce the effects of travel on swelling (talk to your lymphoedema therapist for specific advice):
- those with confirmed diagnosed lymphoedema should wear some form of compression therapy
- those at risk of lymphoedema should understand the risk factors and make a decision in conjunction with their health care provider based on their individual needs.
Preparing for travel:
- obtain a well fitted compression garment, wear it several times before you travel to ensure proper fit and comfort
- place the garment on before travelling
- leave the garment on for 1 – 3 hours after travel to allow tissue pressure to equalise
- if compression bandaging is required – ensure your trained lymphoedema therapist has taught you how to apply the bandaging appropriately
- apply the bandaging prior to flying.
Other strategies to consider include:
- move your limbs; standing and moving around (in the cabin during flights or at rest stops when driving long distances) will encourage improved uptake of extracellular fluid and help prevent further accumulation of fluid in the tissues.
- drink plenty of water; keep hydrated as ambient air in the cabin is dry and can increase dehydration which may increase protein concentration in the tissues and potentially contribute to further swelling in the affected area.
- use roller bags, avoid carrying shoulder bags and have assistance with moving bags
- while away from home continue your regular management regime.
You may also consider:
- a seat with extra leg room (those with lower leg lymphoedema) to elevate the limb
- obtaining a letter from your health care provider regarding your lymphoedema which help answer any questions about your requirements
- wearing loose fitting clothing
- using a squeeze ball to pump your muscles
- minimising the intake of caffeine, alcohol and salty food
- wearing a lymphoedema alert bracelet or necklace
- taking antibiotics if prone to cellulitis
