AA Imposes Night Curfew in Three Townships of Southern Arakan Amid Military Activity

The Arakan Army (AA) has imposed a night curfew in Thandwe, Gwa and Taungup townships in southern Arakan, which are under its control, following increased military activity by Myanmar's military, local residents said.

The curfew has been in effect since August 23 amid reports that the military is preparing to launch a counteroffensive to retake the southern towns. Residents said increased air and ground military activity had also prompted the AA to impose the restrictions.

“They have been declaring that they will retake the southern towns, and airstrikes have continued. Now, with further military movements underway, the curfew has been imposed,” a resident of Thandwe said.

According to local residents, the curfew is in force from 11pm to 5am. Restrictions have also been introduced for fishermen operating at sea, with designated departure and return times based on how far they travel offshore.

Sources close to the AA said Myanmar's military has recently been conducting aerial surveillance, airstrikes and naval movements around Taungup, Thandwe, Gwa, Kyeintali and the area surrounding Ngapali Beach.

“The curfew is in place from 11pm until 5am. Fishing activities at sea are also regulated according to the distance travelled. Fishermen are given specific times for when they must return, depending on when they leave for the fishing grounds,” a resident of Gwa Township said.

The AA has imposed similar restrictions in the Maungdaw District, which is also under its control, following reported activities by armed groups including ARSA, RSO and ARA. A night curfew was introduced there on August 9, according to local sources.
