[BURKINA_MINES] The government has released 70 billion CFA francs (i.e., 175 million US dollars) to acquire an additional 25% stake in the Kiaka gold project, according to the mining company West African Resources (WAF).

WAF states that it “will work in cooperation with the government to finalize the terms of the acquisition by SOPAMIB of 25% of Kiaka SA,” with a target completion by the end of 2026.

This transaction increases the State’s shareholding in the mine to 40% of the share capital, compared to the previous 15%

Nationalization of SOFITEX
Repeal of decrees appointing commissioners and members of the CNDH bureau

(Ouagadougou, April 16, 2026) — The President of Faso, Head of State, His Excellency Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, chaired the weekly Council of Ministers this Thursday. According to the Government Spokesperson, Mr. Pingdwendé Gilbert OUÉDRAOGO, the Council reviewed and adopted several dossiers and made important decisions for the full development of the Burkinabè people, in line with the Popular Progressive Revolution.

On behalf of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, the Council adopted two decrees respectively concerning the nationalization of the Burkinabè Textile Fiber Company (SOFITEX) and the approval of the specific statutes of the said company. According to the Minister in charge of Industry, Mr. Serge Gnaniodem PODA, SOFITEX is a public limited company with a share capital of 19.5 billion CFA francs, 89% owned by the State, 5% by State-related entities, and 6% by national and international private stakeholders.

“Unfortunately, for several years, SOFITEX has been facing numerous difficulties related to the burden of its financial debt, high internal operating costs, delays often observed in payments to producers, as well as certain international factors linked to the cost of raw materials and inputs,” explained Minister PODA.

He stated that in view of these difficulties, which could negatively affect SOFITEX’s performance in the context of the Popular Progressive Revolution, and in accordance with the vision of His Excellency Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, the Government of the People has decided to nationalize the shares previously held by private investors, in order to become the sole 100% shareholder and owner of the company.

Repeal of decrees appointing commissioners and members of the CNDH bureau: “this is not a dissolution of the CNDH”

Under the Ministry of Justice, the Council adopted a decree repealing the decrees appointing the commissioners and members of the bureau of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH). According to Minister Edasso Rodrigue BAYALA, the CNDH operates based on the principles of impartiality, pluralism, complementarity, and cooperation.

“However, for some time now, we have observed that within the National Human Rights Commission, these principles that should guide the institution’s mission are not being respected, or are even being violated on a daily basis,” explained Minister BAYALA. He clarified that this is not a dissolution of the CNDH, but rather a repeal of the said decrees, which will, for example, make it possible to review the law and adapt it to the current context of the fight against terrorism.
