A very real connection linked Bob Marley with Stevie Wonder and even The Jackson 5: the network of major Black artists in the 1970s, where they not only knew each other, but shared stages, visited one another, and viewed each other as icons of the same era. These were not just ordinary moments; they were proof of how Bob Marley became a global cultural center, far beyond the borders of the Caribbean.
Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder first met at the Wonder Dream Concert in Kingston, Jamaica, on October 4, 1975, a fundraising concert for the Jamaican Institute for the Blind. Their meeting was not merely social; the two quickly became friends because they shared the same spirit of liberation, Black pride, and a musical vision centered on community. Bob Marley even joined Stevie on stage during a few rare guest appearances, performing I Shot the Sheriff and Superstition together. Stevie Wonder later referenced Bob in the song Master Blaster (Jammin'), showing that their relationship was not just friendship, but also an artistic dialogue — a fusion between reggae and American soul/funk.
With The Jackson 5, the story was not exactly about performing together as it was with Stevie Wonder, but it was still fascinating. In 1975, the group traveled to Kingston to perform at National Stadium, and famous photographs show Michael Jackson and the other members visiting Bob at 56 Hope Road before the concert. In several image archives, they also appeared alongside Bob Marley & The Wailers on the same event bill. While there is no strong evidence proving Bob performed live with The Jackson 5, the event demonstrated that Bob had already become an icon whom young American stars traveled to Jamaica to meet, respecting reggae as a global cultural movement.
The importance of these encounters was not simply about “famous people meeting each other.” Bob Marley did not exist inside a separate “reggae island.” He was part of a global Black music network, where Motown, soul, funk, R&B, and regg

On the hills of St. Ann, Jamaica, Bob Marley met another one of the most important friends of his life. It was the first time Winston Rodney, later known worldwide as Burning Spear, met Bob Marley — an ordinary moment that would completely change the direction of reggae music forever. Rodney recalled that they met by chance while both heading to a place of prayer. The conversation began like any ordinary exchange: Winston was nervous, Bob was calm, but from that moment, life-changing questions were born.
“We just reason man to man,” Burning Spear later recalled. There was no ceremony, no pressure, just two men speaking honestly on the hills of St. Ann. And in that moment, Winston gathered the courage to ask the question he had long carried inside:
“I would like to get involved in the music business.”
Bob Marley, with the calmness and experience of someone who lived and breathed music, answered with a short but powerful response:
“All right, just check Studio One.”
It was a simple piece of advice, yet it opened an entirely new world. Studio One — known throughout reggae circles as the birthplace of legends — became the starting point of Burning Spear’s career. Rodney later said:
“And that’s how everything got started with Burning Spear.”
This meeting became proof of the power of guidance and quiet support. Bob Marley did not directly teach or manage Rodney, but with one simple sentence, he handed him the key to enter the music industry. The differences in their artistic paths also made the story even more fascinating: Bob Marley followed a more global reggae direction, spreading messages of peace and unity to the world; Burning Spear focused deeply on politics, African history, and the spirit of Garveyism. Different paths, but both rooted in the same foundation: passion and belief in the power of music.
Not only in interviews, Rodney also acknowledged Bob Marley’s influence in his own music. In the song As It Is, he mentioned that it was Bob who pointed him toward St
