Ethiopia completes controversial Nile dam, escalating dispute with Egypt

Germany has made significant strides in decarbonizing its steel industry by replacing coal (typically used in the form of coking coal) with green hydrogen—hydrogen produced using renewable energy.

One of the landmark projects in this transition is spearheaded by Thyssenkrupp, a major German steel manufacturer.

In June 2023, Thyssenkrupp announced the construction of a hydrogen-powered direct reduction plant in Duisburg.

The plant aims to cut annual CO₂ emissions by up to 3.5 million tonnes—a major reduction given that the steel sector is traditionally one of the largest industrial emitters of carbon.

This facility uses green hydrogen instead of carbon-heavy coke to reduce iron ore into sponge iron, which can then be used to make steel, nearly eliminating CO₂ emissions in the process.

This initiative is part of Germany’s broader climate neutrality goals by 2045 and is supported by federal and state funding.

It's also a major benchmark for the global steel industry, which accounts for around 7–9% of global CO₂ emissions.

Although other countries (such as Sweden with HYBRIT) have also built hydrogen-based steel facilities, Germany's scale, industrial backing, and rapid deployment make this plant one of the most advanced and cleanest to date.

The iconic baobab tree, often referred to as the “Tree of Life,” has a fascinating survival mechanism—it can store up to 32,000 gallons of water inside its trunk to withstand extreme droughts.
