Let's discuss this guys journey a bit more. My original post didn't include closeup photos of the scars that I covered, so it's hard to impress upon you how difficult of a project this was.

The forearm skin and underlying tissue was fully separated from the muscle in order to be used as donor tissue in another part of the body.
Then, a top-layer skin graft was taken from his thigh to cover the muscle on the forearm. Skin grafts do not include the entire dermis and epidermis, leaving only a very thin, see-through layer of skin.

So - the question is - how do you tattoo skin that isn't actually skin? We usually tattoo right to the bottom of the epidermis and maybe even a teeny bit at the top of the dermis, where cellular regeneration is ALWAYS in motion, those cells exfoliate and there is always an active change happening during the skins continuous growth cycle.

The Answer - very gently, and with CAREFUL design for critical pigment placement. Notice how the details over the donor tissue held *almost* as good as the details on the healthy skin - now THATS what we're here for!
