This is a sacred time for gathering and giving thanks for the abundance all around us, marking the beginning of harvesting season - the halfway point between the Summer solstice and the Autumn equinox.

WAYS TO HONOUR THIS DAY:

🌾Making an altar with: bread, corn, sunflowers, apples, berries / orange, red, yellow or gold candles / scythe or syckle / citrine, carnelian, golden topaz, tigers eye.
🌾Spend time in nature + meditate, as a way to ground into the season and reconnect with your self. Taking stock of what you have to be grateful for and what you’d like to invite into your life.
🌾Celebrate Lammas by baking a loaf of bread. As you knead the dough, infuse it with intentions of gratitude and abundance. Share your homemade bread with loved ones.
🌾Support local farmers by visiting a farm or market. Purchase fresh produce and grains to honour the first harvest. Use these ingredients in your Lammas feast or rituals, celebrating the high point of summer and the slow transition into Fall

Take the time today to reflect on the fruits of your labor, both literally and metaphorically. Lammas gives us pause to express the gratitude for all the blessings in our lives and to share the abundance with others🧡

𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲-𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮, 𝟭𝟵𝟮𝟱

Many people today would associate the historic agricultural operations of the Doukhobor 'Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood' in British Columbia with orchard-growing. And rightly so. However, what few appreciate is that it was also an enormous vegetable-growing enterprise.

Indeed, for every acre of arable land planted in fruit trees, the communal organization cultivated up to 2.5 acres of vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, etc), small fruit (strawberries, raspberries) and to a lesser extent, grains (flax, oats and wheat).

It must also be noted that the large-scale vegetable-growing was primarily carried out by Doukhobor women and children.

In Ootischenia and Brilliant in 1931, for example, while 1,420 acres of Community land was under orchard, another 2706 acres was under cultivation of vegetables, small fruit and grains.

The extent of Doukhobor communal vegetable growing in Ootischenia is highlighted in the following photograph.

Taken in 1925, it shows several women and young girls weeding long rows of seedling tomatoes in late spring. The tomato patch covers several acres and is flanked on each side by what appears to be forage crops, perhaps clover.

Based on the mountainous background, the photograph was probably taken at the east end of the Second Bench, near the Third Bench in Ootischenia. Given the large alluvial fan at the base of the mountain, it may have been taken near the communal village known as Bol'shaya Pil'nya ('Large Sawmill').

The tomatoes were grown for domestic consumption within the colony, with the surplus sold fresh in local markets or else processed and canned for commercial sale at the nearby Kootenay-Columbia Preserving Works plant in Brilliant.

visual prayers passed from hand to hand, generation to generation.

In the background, I wrote words of reflection; whispers of story, memory, and voice…

May we continue to gather in honour of those who came before us, carrying their stories forward through folklore, storytelling, and voice. In a world that often feels heavy, choosing community becomes its own quiet rebellion.
