✨ Behind the Design

This week I had the opportunity to help a customer who had just purchased a beautiful new living room set.

She was making a significant change—moving from a traditional floral living room to a much more contemporary look. As exciting as that is, it can also feel a little overwhelming.

She wasn't quite sure where to begin with accent pillows and a throw, so I suggested we build a visual colour palette.

Using photos of her living room, a fabric swatch from her accent chair, and the pillow and cushion from the floor model sofa, we were able to see how different colours, textures and patterns worked together before she made a decision.

One of the biggest misconceptions about decorating is that every decision has to be made in one day.

It doesn't.

As we worked through the pillows, our conversation naturally turned to artwork for above her sofa and a lamp for her end table.

Instead of encouraging her to choose everything at once, I suggested she take her new furniture home, enjoy the transformation for a while, and let her eyes adjust to the dramatic change.

Then, when she's ready, she can come back with updated photos of her room and the measurements of her sofa and end table, and together we'll choose the artwork and lighting that complete the space.

Decorating is a journey—not a race.

Sometimes the best design decision is knowing when to pause before adding the next layer.

I spotted this seeded glass vase at work the other day and knew I was bringing it home.

Not because it was perfect...

Because I could already picture how I wanted to style it.

A remote candle for warmth.
A little reindeer moss for texture.
A simple branch to add height and movement.

That's how I decorate. I don't just see what something is—I imagine what it could be.

Sometimes all it takes is a few thoughtful details to transform something ordinary into a piece that brings warmth and character to your home. 💛
