Summerside Children's and Sport Physiotherapy

Comments

My 6 year old daughter broke her elbow really badly and had surgery in August last summer.

Summerside physio was so amazing. They knew how important it was to my daughter to get back to competitive gymnastics, and we worked towards her return. She got full range of motion within a few months, and she has full strength back. She was nervous about doing anything with her elbow at first, but the staff really got her trusting her elbow again, and the therapy dog rigger never left Kynley’s side when he could tell she was nervous. Everyone was so kind, and patient. They made physio super fun , where Kynley could barely tell she was doing rehab. They had amazing games ready that got Kynley excited to go to physio , and when physio was complete she was sad. That’s how much she enjoyed it!

I completely recommend Summerside. They really understand what it takes to get kids physically and mentally ready to get back to their sports.

No matter what your age, if you need physiotherapy, we can help! Summerside Physio offers a unique mix of physiotherapy services, for newborns to seniors, no matter what the diagnosis.

From sports injuries, to developmental concerns, to motor vehicle accidents, we put you and your goals first. Our distinctive approach helps your physio experience not only be successful, but maybe even a little enjoyable. Here at Summerside Physio, we do things a little different…

Sever’s Disease sounds like something scary, but we assure you, it isn’t! It is, however, one of the most common pediatric conditions that we see.

To describe it simply, this condition is characteristic of heel pain, especially after activity. The calf muscle attaches to the heel (also known as the calcaneus) via the Achilles’ tendon. Near this attachment site, a growth plate also resides in youth. The active growth plate can be quite susceptible to irritation during a child’s growing years.

Activities that involve running and jumping require strong contractions of the calf muscle, which in turn can irritate the heel (and growth plate). This is why many children can experience pain in the heel area during or following activity.

The GOOD news is that Physiotherapy can significantly reduce symptoms and help ensure that the child is able to stay active! 👏

Do you know a child that complains of heel pain? We would love to help!

⭐️ Covid-19 UPDATE:
As Alberta reopens to Stage 2, a quick reminder that all existing COVID precautions remain in place in our clinic, as directed by AHS and our regulatory body. These include masking, distancing, and rescheduling if unwell, regardless of vaccination status. Please see summersidephysio.com/covid19 for more information.

We’re excited to get back to “normal” soon, but continue to put everyone’s safety first!

Every. Child. Matters.

Here. It happened here. On this land. In this place of pluralism and unbounded opportunity. Our nation did this. To children. To their families.

The remains of 215 children have been found at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

At this time, we feel deep sadness and anger, but we must also act. It is long past time for action.

The flags on all City of Calgary buildings are being lowered as a symbol of mourning but that's not enough.

All governments must commit to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, not just with words but real action. That means holding true to our commitment to teach this history in every grade so all Canadian children know and commit to a better future.

It means no more dithering. It means clean drinking water and equitable services on every First Nation, starting today. It means access to economic prosperity for all Indigenous peoples.

And it means every one of us taking action. Read the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and commit yourself to the actions in it. (https://t.co/Kpqaqbf3sn?amp=1)

Educate yourself. Dig into the materials at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. (https://t.co/i19Tuux7KR?amp=1)

The City of Calgary has committed to meaningful actions. I encourage you to read the White Goose Flying Report. (https://t.co/eJST2uj6BN?amp=1)

Take a free course, like this one offered by the University of Alberta. (https://t.co/FPM5gBDV7T?amp=1)

Teach your kids. Some good resources here from First Nations Child & Family Caring Society. (https://t.co/CHNGgnP03A?amp=1)

Here are some more resources. (https://t.co/OBd9yfCRod?amp=1)

Donate to residential school survivors in British Columbia. (https://t.co/hhBKxhCPHU?amp=1)

Support the excellent work of Dr. Cindy Blackstock and team. (https://t.co/I7ldhl5X5I?amp=1)

Support a local or national organization doing good work with survivors in your community, like Awo Taan. (https://t.co/PajoIUdvbi?amp=1)

Support the Aboriginal Friendship Society of Calgary. (https://t.co/5TYZ1G6ZAU?amp=1) And so many others doing good work.

And be loud. Yes, it was politicians who made these decisions and your representatives need to hear from you now. A good place to start is to tell the Government of Alberta that its proposed curriculum must be changed. (https://t.co/XbxJMLiwz2?amp=1)

We must all commit to being uncomfortable and calling out racism wherever we see it, in all its forms, particularly against Indigenous peoples. The time for excuses, rationalization and minimizing the harm is long past.

This includes accountability for all of the organizations who were essential to implementing the government’s policies. They must answer, sincerely and justly, for the harm that was inflicted upon Indigenous peoples by their hand.

The Government of Canada set up a National Indian Residential School Crisis Line to provide support to former residential school students and those affected. Access emotional and crisis referral services by calling the 24-Hour National Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.

The greatest honours I have ever received were the names given to me by my Blackfoot and Tsuut'ina families: A’paistootsiipsii and Iitiya. I must be "Always Ready" to "Move camp and the others follow." That is my commitment.

Collectively, I hope that we take this moment of shock and of grief, and use it to ignite action across this nation, for all of us. All our relations. Truth. Reconciliation. Action.

Does your little one sit in a “W” most of the time? It looks like this: their bottom rests between the legs which are rotated inward and feet are behind them tucked in or out. When you look down from above the legs look like a “W”.

Let’s get technical: in this position their base of support is very wide, their center of gravity is low, and children can literally “hang out” like this for ages with minimal core muscle engagement. Posture becomes slumped, rotation is limited, it is difficult to weight shift or cross the midline, and it overstretches the most important hip stability muscles while shortening other muscle groups in the hips and legs. The end result can be core weakness, abnormal walking patterns (knocked kneed, pigeon toed, toe walking) and can lead to coordination issues.

What can you do? Encourage other positions like side sitting, long sitting, criss cross applesauce or tailor sitting. Cue your little one with a simple phrase like “legs in front” and correct them. Change the environment - play at a low table with a child sized chair.

If you think your little one is “W” sitting BECAUSE of weakness, tightness, or cannot sit any other way, Physio can help! ✅

May is National Physiotherapy Month! We LOVE what we do, and feel so privileged to be able to help people on a daily basis ❤️.

Did you know that Physiotherapists work in a large variety of settings 🤔? Not only do Physiotherapists work to help people recover from ankle sprains and broken bones, but in many other areas as well! Did you know that Physiotherapists also help people who are recovering from burns? Or that they also help individuals who are suffering from cardio respiratory conditions? These are just a few additional examples of how Physiotherapists can help!

What have been your experiences with Physiotherapists? How have they helped you? Comment below! ⬇️⬇️⬇️
