Today’s harvest is Stellaria media - chickweed - is one of those unassuming little plants that is incredibly valuable in traditional herbal skincare. And my sister in law said I should take all of it - it grows prolifically in amongst her veggies.

I’ll take these beautiful fresh plants home, allow them to semi-dry and wilt, and then tuck them into oil to begin their transformation into a rich botanical infusion.

Chickweed contains a variety of naturally occurring plant compounds, including flavonoids, phytosterols, triterpenoids, carotenoids and chlorophyll. While not everything found in a plant is oil soluble, an oil infusion is particularly useful for drawing out many of its lipophilic (or fat-loving) constituents, including plant sterols, carotenoids and other lipid-soluble compounds.

And that gorgeous green colour?

Some of the chlorophyll and other plant pigments are carried into the oil as well, often giving a good chickweed infusion a beautiful green colour.

Traditionally, chickweed has been treasured as a cooling, soothing botanical and used topically for dry, itchy, irritated or generally unhappy skin. Its infused oil makes a beautiful base for handcrafted salves, balms and other botanical skincare.

This is why I love working with whole plants.

Harvest them at their best.
Give them time.
Let the oil capture what it can.

And watch what happens next!

Happy Friday, Beauties! Our summer outdoor markets are coming to a close after tomorrow.

Today, I’m gearing up for the Sweater Weather Market in lovely downtown Slave Lake from 11-4 tomorrow (note the special time). I’m wrapping lip balms, organizing stock and repacking my car for the last time this summer.

I’ve been back and forth between Slave Lake and GP, and It’s been a beautiful season of visiting family, housesitting, helping with animal chores, teaching classes, and working many outdoor markets here and around the Peace.

We have some perfect fall weather ahead, so I’ll wrap up work early today and hit one of my favourite, soul-soothing beachy places (possibly for the last time this year) before I have to head back to Grande Prairie in a few days.

The chaos is real today!! I’ve been practicing a difficult pour for a wedding soap. It consists of nine colours, an angle pour, a hanger swirl and a beautiful top. I have made a few batches, none of them quite right. Until last night. I think I tweaked the colours just right and I’m going for it!

One down, six more to go…..

What would I do without them? We labelled and wrapped a pile of soap today and emptied the curing racks to make room for more!! The dehumidifier has been working overtime and things are getting back to normal.

Let’s face it, it hasn’t been the greatest week and my focus has been off. The classes I’ve taught have been so fun, and my friends and family who’ve brought lunch and snacks, coffee, and offered helping hands are so appreciated. These people are keeping my cup full. ❤️

I had the absolute pleasure of teaching a soap-making class in Valleyview last night. What a fantastic group of lovely, rambunctious women. The jokes, the banter, and the apple cake……so good for my soul! Thanks for having me and I hope to see you all again.
