DIY Lemon Beauty Recipes
Lemons are yet another one of nature's multitaskers, and lemon-based products and recipes span many industries, including food, beverage, and household cleaners. Historically, they've been popular in cosmetics because of their pleasant scent and potent vitamin C concentration. Widely known as the active ingredient in many hair and skin lightening products (remember Sun-In, anyone?), lemon is also a great toner, brightener, cleanser, and fragrance. If you like to start your morning with a detoxifying cup of hot water, lemon juice, and honey, you’ll love these citrus-based beauty recipes. Try them on your skin and nails before lemons officially go out of season.
Acne-Fading Lemon Yogurt Mask
2 tablespoons honey, any organic brand
4 teaspoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed is best, but you can use bottled juice)
3 teaspoons plain Greek yogurt
1 egg white
The citric acid in lemons has natural lightening and exfoliating properties that help fade remaining acne marks. The egg white helps boost your skin's ability to protect itself, and honey serves as an antibacterial agent and humectant that soothes and hydrates skin. In no particular order, combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and whisk them until the consistency thickens. Apply a tablespoon or two of the mask onto your clean, dry skin (enough to coat your face) and let it set for 15 minutes. Gently wash the mask off with warm water and pat dry. This recipe yields eight applications, so you can keep it in the refrigerator for one week or share with your whole family!
Lemon Sugar Hand and Foot Scrub
1/2 cup granulated sugar—raw or brown sugar with larger granules works too
2 tablespoons almond oil (you can also substitute apricot, olive, or jojoba oi)
Juice of half a lemon
OPTIONAL: 3 drops lavender, mint, or rosemary essential oil
This easy-to-make scrub is perfect for tired hands, feet, elbows, and even knees. In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients in no particular order and immediately massage the mixture onto hands or feet. You can add a few drops of lavender, mint, or rosemary oil to invigorate and refresh. Rinse off with warm water, then slather on your favorite lotion for extra moisture.
Mellow Yellow Nail Rinse
1 ripe lemon, cut in half
Small plastic ziplock bag
Your nails can turn yellow from prolonged sun exposure or if you wear nail polish for too long. To brighten your nails and reduce yellowing, first cut a ripe lemon in half. Squish the tips of your fingers into one half of the lemon and massage it on your fingers for two minutes. Store the lemons in a plastic ziplock bag and repeat this technique on every nail for five to seven days (try it on your toes, too!). After a week, you'll notice whiter, cleaner nails.

Get Glossy Eyes!
Have you always wondered how models rock lustrous, shiny eye makeup looks in high-fashion editorial shoots? For a quick liquid-y texture on the lids, makeup artists usually turn to Vaseline to achieve the effect. Unfortunately, slathering jelly over your eyes doesn’t bode well for durability, and the lack of lasting power has us yearning for more hard-wearing options. Try these products and techniques and see how you create glossy lids that last!
Make it Multidimensional
A glossy, creamy eye makeup looks gorgeous on its own. But add a little shimmer to that mix, and you've got yourself glowing peepers like you've never seen before! We love dabbing a drop of Lorac's 3D Liquid Lustre on the center of our lids and across our brow bone for a reflective finish. And because you only need a drop of product, you’ll never worry about creasing!
(Lip) Gloss it Up
Tacky lip glosses are designed to last longer on your lips, and the same rule applies on your eyes! Since they're less slippery than a lotion or jelly, a lip lacquer stays on your skin for the long haul. To avoid a sticky situation, apply your favorite thick formula over an eye primer, and keep the placement above the crease and on the center of the lids.
Layer the Lacquer
Everything lasts longer on the skin when it's layered. Apply your glossing agent—jelly, luster, or lip gloss—over a base of eye primer and crease-proof color like makeup artist Jordan L. in his stunning glossy eyes tutorial. Keep alternating shadow and gloss for added durability.

Inspiration: Heart Lips
Nothing says Valentine's Day quite like hearts do! Celebrate the romantic holiday by contouring the cute shape where it naturally exists: your lips! Get some inspiration on how to rock the flirty design in three unique styles.
It may seem like a dramatic effect, but the heart-shaped pucker is actually a vintage style. In the ‘20s, many women rounded their cupids bow and lower lips to create a smaller pout. To mimic the flapper look, apply a touch of foundation around the corners of your mouth so they blend in with your skin. Then use a deep wine lip color to darken the center.
For a silly theme party with your gal pals, layer two hues of pink together. Apply a slightly lighter lip color to your pout. Then use a darker pencil to draw a heart in the center of your mouth. For a more precise shape, be sure the bottom is pointy. Or create the effect with two different lipstick textures (one matte, one with shimmer) for a more subtle look.
Dark and lovely! Michelle O went for a Gothic take on Alice and Wonderland's Queen of Hearts. Her bold black lipstick contrasted the delicate lavender heart. This look might be fun if you are going to an anti-Valentine's fête.
