🌿 When I studied herbalism in my Herbalist program, one of the things that fascinated me most was its history and the persecution herbalists received and, in many ways, still receive today.
From burning “witches” at the stake because they used herbs, to discrediting, fining, and even imprisoning herbalists because they were helping people heal outside the established medical system. Doctors were held in high regard then, just as they are today, and access to healing became increasingly tied to formal education and licensing, you were not to go against that system.
Then came the medical schools that were heavily funded by the Rockefellers. The Rockefellers, who first made their fortune in oil, later became major influences in medical education and research finding that there was money to be made here also. This marked a turning point where pharmaceutical approaches praised and elevated, while herbalists and their schools declined.
What I find interesting is that we seem to be coming full circle.
More and more people are returning to whole herbs and traditional plant medicine. Herbs contain many constituents that work together, not one constituent extracted and used in high doses. That isolated approach can sometimes cause more harm than when those constituents are used in their whole form as nature intended.
I’m not saying modern medicine doesn’t have its place. It absolutely does. But I do believe people are remembering that healing didn’t begin in a laboratory. For thousands of years, it came from the earth, from observation, from experience, and from the plants that grew around us….what God provided to us…. We cannot outsmart Mother Nature 🌿
Sorry I went on a huge tangent! 😂

I found this Lady Slipper Orchard or Moccasin Slipper, today on a walk . I’ve never seen it before as they are endangered and rare, taking several years to mature, so I was excited, but also didn’t harvest it for that reason too. Isn’t it a beauty?
The Sacred Slipper
Ojibway Legend tells of the great courage of a girl, who saves her people from illness. The girl knows she must journey to the next village, to get the healing herb mash-ki-ki for her people, who have all fallen ill.
After lining her moccasins with rabbit fur, she braves a raging snowstorm and crosses a dark frozen lake, to reach the village. Then, rather than waiting for morning, she sets out for home, while the villagers sleep; determined to help her people.
During her trek through the snow, she loses her moccasins and her bare feet are cut by icy shards; bleeding with every step, until she reached her home.
The next Spring, beautiful Lady’s Slippers bloom from the place where her moccasins were lost, and from every spot her injured feet touched. This is the story of how the Lady’s Slipper came to be… 😊 🥿
