December 8th ā Upper Body (Part 1): Breaking up is hard to do!
Do your shoulders need to break up with your ears? Many of us carry ātensionā here in our neck and shouldersā¦the question is, how can we help balance this out and allow us to move better? I saw many dead-lifts that look like the one on the left today during my workout. Dead-lifts are a complicated exercise...the hardest part occurs when your muscles are in their weakest position (i.e fully lengthened) which if done with improper form can set you up for injury, tightness and pain!
Form is so important if you truly want to get the most benefit from your workouts...below is a great little article emphasizing the importance of good form. I still hire coaches and trainers to help me with mine, lose the ego and do it right...you're too important not to!

I get that in sports we *sometimes* sacrifice our bodies for the finish line, but this is NOT ok!

Internal vs external...I often give clients an external cue or focus which then helps them create an internal focus or awareness (or vice versa). Pretty cool stuff!

I attended a healthy focus weight loss seminar today. Most would tell me that I donāt need to ālose weightā and you are perhaps right, at least not anymore with where Iām at in this point in my life. However, what I learned today can be applied to any goal and believe me, I have many! A comment was made recently (something I have heard from others in the past) that suggested things happen easily for me because Iām so enthusiastic or such a go-getter, or Iām not like them/theyāre not like me whatever it wasā¦itās a complete brule (bullsh!t rule ā a new term I learned today). I am no different than any other person who struggles to achieve a goal, whatever it may be. I have learned to and continue to find resources and use them; I have focused on becoming and not trying and yes there are setbacks and struggles, let me be clear. Have you ever noticed that the harder you tried to achieve something, the further away from that something you got? You cared too much about what others would think, you were afraid to fail, ended up distracted and told yourself you're a failure etc., but when you focused on becoming and doing i.e making small changes that become a lifestyle and eventually who you become as a person, the thing you wanted was much easier to attain? I attended this workshop with open ears and an open mind because I am learning to believe that I am worth it and am enough. I no longer want to make excuses for the things I want to see happen in my lifeā¦if you believe you are worth it, you are enoughā¦so stop making excuses and find a way to go get the things you want. Iām here to help in any way I can so shoot me a message and if you're in Lethbridge, check out www.jamescastelli.ca. I'll be sure to post when he holds more seminars/workshops as they are worth attending!

Who takes it easy in their first group class at a studio or gym that encourages you to go heavy, go hard and go all out? Even if you are advised to take it easy because you are a beginner, no one can seem to lose the ego to listen, or the individual attention isn't there to guide these people safely...imo.

āIt is concluded that isometric strength training as used in the present study can cause increased recruitment of the available motor unit pool, improved efficiency at submaximal loads, and surprisingly also enhancement of the oxidative metabolism in the muscle.ā

I worked with an 8 year old girl in a squash program who couldn't lift her arm due to all the other activities she was put in...why she was signed up for squash is beyond me.
