There’s no such thing as too much love ❤️

I have been hearing this audio around from one of my favorites, Gabor Maté, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share his words. He co-wrote one of my all time favorite parenting books, Hold On To Your Kids. His work has often given me the confidence to tune out outside voices that go against what feels right to me.

There’s this misconception that independence comes from pushing our children to be independent. In fact it comes from being able to depend on us for many years.

A big difference between going into motherhood the second time for me versus the first is I am more confident in myself. Last time I listened to outside voices that were often focused on him not being too dependent on me. They said not to hold him too much, to avoid feeding to sleep, to put him down awake, for example. Trying to listen to others instead of him was the hardest part of the newborn stage for me.

Every child is different. And while I’m sure some of the advice I got worked for others, it didn’t for us. He needed (and still needs) a lot of cuddles. At some point I was able to block out the noise and just respond to him how felt right to me. I look forward to doing that from the start this time.

Loving our children, responding when they need us, coregulating- they’re never bad things. It’s about following the child and responding with love ❤️.
