Just because a nail tech charges 75$, does not mean they profit off 75$, here’s why:

1. Supplies cost money every single set💁‍♀️
Every client appointment uses physical product that needs to be replaced. Gel-X tips, base coat, top coat, color gel, primer, dehydrator, files, buffers, slip solution, and cuticle oil all get used up with every single set. These costs come directly out of what you charged.

2. Overhead is always running in the background🤷‍♀️
Even on days you have no clients, costs exist. Things like your curing lamp, ring light, booking app subscription, Canva, electricity, and cleaning supplies are ongoing expenses that quietly eat into every dollar you make.

3. Fees take a cut of every transaction🤦‍♀️
The moment a client pays you through any platform, Square, PayPal, e-transfer fees, or a booking app, a percentage gets skimmed off the top before the money even reaches you. Small percentages add up fast over many bookings.

4. Packaging isn’t free👀
Bags, tissue paper, thank you cards, stickers, and anything you use to present your work professionally all cost money. It seems small per set but it adds up monthly.

5. Your time has a value⏳
A 2–3 hour appointment at $75 is already only $25–37 per hour before any deductions. Once supplies and overhead come out, your real hourly rate drops significantly. Your time is a cost too, even if it doesn’t show up on a receipt.

6. Taxes exist💵
Once you’re registered as a business, a portion of everything you earn goes to the government. Many new nail techs forget to set this aside and get caught off guard at tax time.
