We become cosmetologist because we want to be creative… and sometimes we get to do things like this!
Makeup by yours truly.

During my apprenticeship, the stylists I worked for said “if you’ve got time to lean, you’ve got time to clean”. I was a lazy teen then! And when I was done cleaning, they directed me to the ever-ready mannequin that was set up for me to practice on… did so many finger waves that they won’t leave my fingers or memory.
I used Oribe Rock Hard Gel while working the hair and Oribe Superfine Strong Hair Spray to set once done here and the combo was perfect!
1) Wet the hair and gel it thoroughly, combing through
2) Part the hair where it’s most comfortable or best fitting the style
3) Begin on one side, then the other meeting the sides in the back:
-c-curve with the comb, re-combing as needed
-place middle finger on top of the centre of that curve next to where the ridge will go, keeping the comb in contact with the scalp the whole time
-with the comb next to this finger, outside, push the comb in the opposite direction from the c-curve and in the direction of the next, opposite c-curve
-place the index finger on the other side of the ridge created by pushing the comb this way, securing the ridge with the middle finger on one side of the ridge and the index on the other side of the ridge
-c-curve in the opposite direction from the first curve
-lifting fingers from the first ridge, place the middle finger now in the middle of the second c-curve
-place the comb next to the middle finger, push the comb in the opposite direction from the c-curve to create another ridge
-place index finger on the opposite side of this ridge
-curl ends into a pin curl, or comb behind the ear as done here
-repeat on the opposite side, then meet the two in the middle back
-set under a dryer until completely dry, then comb out or wear as-is
*following the movement that the hair wants to flow in works best
*recede the c-curve at the hairline recession
*comb as many times as necessary to make the shape as smooth as you want it to be - yes, it’s lots of combing!
*spray the hair as needed keeping it wet enough to easily manipulate
*use a gel that’s thick enough to control the hair and smooth enough to work with - this is preference dependent, try a few recommended

A perfect shape - complete with a fringe - to frame a winning smile… and those eyes! For Mami’s naturally curly tresses, we used Oribe Supershine shampoo and conditioner, Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream, Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection Spray; we blew it smooth and ironed before perfecting the lines of her precision haircut.
To style this curly, use Oribe Moisture & Control shampoo, conditioner and Curl Gloss Hydration and Hold, then twist each section after combing product through.

A throwback from 2000 which I’m nostalgic over! This is my portfolio from back when I’d just finished makeup artistry school at Blanche MacDonald.
The first set of images I’d taken myself with my recently departed uncle’s film camera of my sister. I’m uncertain whether I have the negatives any longer and printed these myself back then. The following 5 images are the from my year-end Blanche photoshoot: one colour and 4 black and whites. Then an image taken by a fellow hairdresser that I’d worked with in Victoria and the image is a high school friend of mine who I’d done her hair and makeup. Yes, it is quite grainy, but I kind of like that. There are a few images of some special effects makeup I did on a friend: I took one shot in a couple of different exposures because the spirit gum was visible where I’d adhered the brow hairs. This was a brow block, ear tips, sprigs of fairy hair, and a natural corrective makeup. The last shot is from a short film I’d worked on for the day with Fulvio Cecere “Foo”. This was his production and a single character short film. After doing his makeup I spent the next few hours chasing him attempting to shade him from the sun with an umbrella as the camera followed him running in the desert. I definitely ran way more than he did that day - and got a nice sunburn too! That was a fun day although a little bit much. Aren’t the fun ones usually? I still have the film VHS.

Do you see why she's about to laugh? Super cute!
We used L'oreal Infallible foundation #203 which gave this glow to her skin and NYX Lift & Sn**ch Brow Tint Pen on her amazing arches for a little definition and balance.
The eyeshadow is Ben Nye Highlight and Contour palette from Studio FX Merle Norman at Cathedral Centre (downtown Van - yes, you can all go there and shop!) and a little shimmer from an ABH eye palette.

Pretty cut and colour for a lovely lady today.

These swirls of hair have me swirling too - just so pretty! I used a hair puff to create structure even though she already has so much to work with. This allows sections of hair to be laid in these patterns on top of the puff.
