🌿The woman behind Love Thy HnS

Hi, I’m Valérie, owner and founder of Love Thy HnS.

But before becoming an entrepreneur, I too had to learn how to understand, care for and, most importantly… love my hair.

🌿It all started in high school…

My hair journey really began in high school, when I decided to start relaxing my hair.

At the time, social pressure and Western beauty standards had convinced me that my natural hair simply wasn’t beautiful enough as it was.

🌿Years of relaxing my hair

I have a very sensitive scalp, and I often experienced burning and irritation whenever I had my hair relaxed.

Over the years, my hair also became increasingly fragile and prone to breakage.

I knew something had to change.

🌿The BIG CHOP

Then, a few weeks before my next relaxer appointment, I noticed something…

My new growth was strong, healthy and naturally curly. 🤎

That’s when, in 2001, I made a big decision: I did the BIG CHOP and decided to wear my hair natural.

🌿Learning to embrace myself

That decision wasn’t met with enthusiasm by everyone around me.

Between the reactions from family and friends and the looks from others, I had to learn to let go of other people’s opinions and work on accepting myself and my natural hair.

It was the beginning of a whole new chapter.

🌿Becoming my own hair expert

I spent months — and eventually years — learning.

I watched YouTube videos, read books about curly and Afro-textured hair, and joined discussion forums in the United States.

I wanted to understand my hair: what it needed, what worked, what didn’t, and how to properly care for it.

🌿 And then, something unexpected happened…

Once I developed a routine that worked for my hair, something unexpected started happening.

Women would regularly stop me in the street to ask:

“What do you use in your hair?”
“How do you get your curls to look like that?”

At the time, I was ordering most of my products from the United States because options for textured hair were still very limited in Canada.

I quickly realized that I wasn’t the only woman looking to better understand her natural hair, find the right products and learn how to embrace and enhance her curls.
