“People don’t change. Sometimes, you do.”
For a long time, I thought my relationships would improve if the other person changed.
I wanted my dad to be different. I was angry. I complained. I wished he could become the person I needed him to be.
But then I started doing my own inner work.
And something shifted.
I found compassion.
I found acceptance.
I stopped trying to control someone else’s behaviour.
I realized that I cannot make someone change. They have to choose that for themselves.
But I can choose who I become.
I can decide what I value.
What I accept.
What I will no longer tolerate.
What I need.
And what I believe I deserve.
And surprisingly, when I changed my relationship with myself, my relationship with my dad improved too.
Not because I changed him.
Because I changed me.
Sometimes the most powerful question isn’t:
How can I make them change?
It’s:
What do I need to change within myself?
What relationship in your life made you learn this lesson?
