Main water reserves of the skin and the role of the epidermis in its retention.
The water reserves which the skin gets its nourishment from are divided into three main sources:
static - in the epidermis;
dynamic - at the level of the dermis;
transdermal - the capillaries of the dermis.
All these levels of water storage communicate with each other, but its movement within the skin is always directed from deep levels to superficial. Water from the upper layer cannot go back to the lower one.
When the barrier is damaged and the epidermis constantly needs replenishment, the dermal reserve is gradually reduced. At the same time, the skin looks dull; wrinkles are easily formed.
The water volume depends on the following factors:
- daily water intake (1.5-2 liters per day);
- healthy excretory system (kidneys, intestines, sweat glands);
- not damaged vascular walls.
If the capillaries are damaged (which often happens during age-related skin changes), water cannot enter the dermis.
To improve microcirculation, it is necessary to use vaso-strengthening agents (for example, with niacinamide, horse chestnut extract, Centella Asiatica).
It is important to observe the water intake regime and protect the skin from damaging effects, use products with moisture-retaining components e.g. water-based products with aloe vera, polysaccharides. Glycerin-containing creams can have a deeper moisturizing effect. Glycerin molecules on the surface of the skin open aquaporins - nanochannels that connect the epidermis to the dermis. Through aquaporins water can pe*****te into the deeper layers of the dermis.
Thus, many factors need to be taken into consideration when controlling the water content in the skin - from the daily water drinking and the health state of the kidneys to the home care products.
