Life in Brooks Alberta as An immigrant
Living in Brooks has changed my life in different ways , people here are warm. I have met lots of people from different countries who have showed me and reassured me that good people still exist, it is an amazing feeling to be surrounded by people that are genuinely kind and warm.
I miss home, I miss Nigeria , I miss Ala Igbo , i miss my families back home , i miss my friends , i miss going to chapel to pray . I miss my native foods, I miss going to market in 🇳🇬 , I miss going out to buy suya or Akara. I miss those cheerful greetings from my village people “ Nne ah gawanu o” “nwa nke nta kedu ka imere” . I miss roasting organic corn 🌽 straight from the farm. I miss going to Orie umuobom to buy “ elele uka na Agidi jellof ndi oku” . I also miss going to mass on Sunday and hearing the choir singing “ ihem nwere kam ga enye Diwenum” I miss all the Igbo catholic songs. It still rings in my heart. I can’t wait to visit home again. It’s been seven years since I left home . Even though I have visited home twice , it is not enough as I had very short stay.
The little challenges we face here in Brooks is that there are no African shop in my city, sometimes I see some of my native foods in Asian shops or we have to drive to another city called Calgary where we can at least see like 50% of Nigerian foodstuff.
