Book: His only wife by Peace Adzo Medie

Review : The film follows Afi, a young woman who enters an arranged marriage with Elikem, a wealthy man from a powerful family. Although they are legally married, Elikem is emotionally involved with another woman, whom his family disapproves of. Afi struggles with loneliness, pressure from her in-laws, and the expectations of being a “good wife.”

Honestly, from the first page, when Afi mentioned she married her husband in absentia, I knew it wasn’t going to end well because who misses their own wedding nitori olorun? But as I kept reading, I couldn’t blame her… it was the people around her (her mum and extended family) who took advantage of her youth, naivety, and eagerness to please. I’m glad she chose herself in the end.

It was an easy read, and I appreciated learning a bit about Ghanaian culture.
