This is a Bowfin and it has been around for over 150 million years, making it a true evolutionary survivor!
This lung-like organ allows the bowfin to gulp atmospheric air at the surface, enabling it to thrive in warm, stagnant or completely oxygen depleted swamps where other fish would suffocate. If its water source dries up during a severe drought, a bowfin can burrow into the damp mud and survive for weeks by breathing air until the rains return.
Reminder this is NOT a snakehead, if you catch something that looks like this make sure you identify it properly so you don’t dispatch the wrong species. Snakehead are invasive and should be removed, bowfin are native and should be released.

Try this next time you’re catfishing if you get bored of sitting and waiting around for a bite!

I can’t believe how many bass chased my frog! They were definitely hungry and aggressive today. Super cool to frog fish in clear water, but also makes it harder because you get excited when you see them coming so I set the hook too early the first few times 😂
