⛔️ WHY YOU SHOULD EAT TOGETHER AS A FAMILY

Mama, Papa!

Today, I want to talk about something simple but powerful.

Eating together as a family.

The research is clear.

🔴Children who eat with their family regularly:

🔸 Eat more vegetables and fruits.

🔸 Have stronger language development.

🔸 Perform better in school.

🔸 Show fewer behavioral problems.

🔸 Have better emotional health.

🔸 Are less likely to develop eating disorders.

🔸 Build stronger social skills.

🔴Why does this work?

Modeling. When children see you eating vegetables, they want vegetables.

When they see you enjoying food, they enjoy food.

It is that simple.

✅Conversation.
Family meals are talking time.

This builds vocabulary, listening, and communication skills naturally, without any extra effort.

✅Routine.
Regular mealtimes create structure and security.

Children feel safe. They feel loved.

✅Food education.

“This orange helps your eyes see better.”

“Eggs make you strong like daddy.”

Children are always learning.

The table is one of their first classrooms.

🔴How to create powerful family meals:

No screens.
No TV. No phones.
No tablets.
Just family and food.

Everyone eats the same food.

Do not cook separate meals for children.

They eat what the family eats, adjusted for their age and portion size.

Keep it pleasant.
No shouting. No forcing.
No punishment discussions at the table.
No bribes.

Mealtime should feel safe and happy.

Involve the children. Let them help set the table.

Let them serve themselves with guidance.

Let them help clean up.

Ownership builds confidence.

Talk together.

Ask about their day.

Tell stories. Laugh.
Make memories.

Start small.

You cannot do every meal together?

Start with Sunday lunch or one evening meal per week.

Then gradually increase.

The goal is at least one family meal together every day.

You are not just feeding bodies.

You are building relationships.

You are creating traditions your children will carry for the rest of their lives.

I am Dr. JINOH, your community pharmacist and internationally certified pediatric nutrition specialist.

I care.

Kindly share this with another mother.

Someone who needs this can benefit from that one act of sharing.

⛔️Mama. Papa.

Your child is pushing the plate away again.

You cooked. You tried. They refused.

Before you worry, hear this: most children who refuse food are not sick.

The problem is usually how we feed them.

Three nutrients. Most Cameroonian children are not getting enough of them.

And the damage happens quietly, before you even notice something is wrong.

The first one is iron.

Iron is what carries oxygen through the blood to the brain.

When a child doesn’t have enough, the brain is literally running low on oxygen.
That child gets tired easily.

They sit quietly in class but nothing is going in.

They look fine; but they are not learning at full capacity.

Feeding the body correctly permit it to heal.

⛔️ Sugar fills the stomach fast; but it brings nothing with it.

No vitamins.

No minerals.

No protein.

Just calories.

📛 Individual counseling changes lives.

But it doesn't change systems.

After years of one-on-one conversations in pharmacy settings, I've seen the same thing play out: a meaningful exchange, a moment of clarity for a parent, and then no follow-up, no reinforcement, nothing to make it stick.

Good intentions don't scale. Designed systems do.

That's why I believe we need a Community-Based Parental Preventive Education Framework, one that connects the dots between:

🔸 Pharmacy touchpoints (where trust already exists).

🔸 Digital reinforcement (meeting families where they are).

🔸 Structured workshops (building lasting knowledge).

🔸 Measurable behavior indicators (so we know it's working).

Preventive health has always had the heart. What it's often missing is the architecture.

When education becomes structured, outcomes become measurable.
When outcomes become measurable, sustainability becomes possible.
And when sustainability becomes possible, real community change follows.

The conversations I've had have mattered. But I want them to matter systemically.

That is why WunaDocta was born. That's the work ahead.

⛔️At the International Pharmaceutical Forum in Lomé, Togo (2024), the theme was "Healthcare Access."

Most conversations focused on financing, infrastructure, and pharmaceutical supply chains.

All essential.

But working daily in community pharmacy here in Douala has shown me another side of access.

Not long ago, a mother walked in asking for vitamins for her toddler.

When I asked what the child eats in a typical day, she paused.

She wasn’t sure what “enough protein” actually meant. She wasn’t sure if what she was feeding was adequate.

She had access to the pharmacy.
She had access to products.
What she lacked was structured, reliable guidance.

That moment reminded me: access to healthcare must include access to knowledge.

Many families rely on fragmented advice: relatives, neighbours, social media. Not because they don’t care. But because preventive education is not consistently built into first-contact care.

And so preventable child health challenges persist. This is not because treatment is unavailable, but because guidance is inconsistent.

This is what has shaped my professional focus: integrating evidence-based nutrition education into everyday community pharmacy practice.

Pharmacies are often the first point of contact in our communities.
We can do more than dispense products.
We can build capacity.

Healthcare access must evolve from product access to empowerment.

True equity begins when families are equipped not just to treat illness, but to prevent it.

How are we embedding preventive education into frontline healthcare systems where we work?
