Thomas A. Dorsey was a jazz player and was very prolific. He was well known across America in the late 18th century.
Yet deep inside of his heart, he knew that something was missing.
Fast forward.....
In the early 19th century, he finally and genuinely gave his heart to the Lord. He became genuinely born again.
He became the choir director and good in piano and had a tremendously gorgeous voice.
The the day he played during the Baptist crusade in the early 19th century, the presence of God fell mightily and the atmosphere was charged. The anointing was too much and electric.
After playing and singing for hours he almost pass out. So he had to halt, sat down and to catch his breath 🫁.
As he was still fanning himself and wiping the sweat from his face, a little boy walked up to him and handed him a telegram note.
When he opened the telegram, it read: " YOUR WIFE HAS DIED".
THOMAS collapsed. He later regained consciousness and headed immediately home. He got home and found the his wife had just delivered of a bouncy baby boy before dying.
He was caught between and betwixt. On one hand, the sorrow of losing his dear wife. And on the other hand, the joy of welcoming a baby boy.
As fate will have it, just few hours later, the boy died. 😭😭😭😭😭 What is he gon do now?? He was heartbroken and devastated.
He locked himself up, not wanting to talk to anybody. He got so angry at God. He thought God was unfair and unjust. How could he suffer for doing God's work???
His friend persistently and insistently encouraged him and led him back to church.
That night he got on the piano and started playing.
In the middle of his ministration, he burst out into new songs. That was the day he sang out the words of the prominent hymn song:
"PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND"
