The human foot is a complex structure made up of 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is designed to tolerate load, adapt to uneven surfaces and allow efficient transfer of force between the ground and the rest of the body during everyday activities such as walking, running and standing.

Each foot contains three main regions: the hindfoot, midfoot and forefoot. These regions work together to provide both stability and adaptability. The midfoot forms the arches of the foot, which are not rigid structures but dynamic systems that change shape depending on load, speed and surface conditions.

Foot arches are often misunderstood. They are not meant to stay fixed or “held up” at all times. They naturally lower and recoil as part of normal function. A flatter or higher-looking arch on its own does not indicate a problem and does not reliably predict pain or injury.

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue on the sole of the foot. Its role is to assist with load transfer and energy storage rather than acting as a passive support strap. Changes in plantar fascia sensitivity are more closely related to load tolerance and irritation than to foot shape.

Foot muscles play an active role in movement and balance, but they do not work in isolation. They function as part of a wider system that includes the ankle, knee and hip. Pain in the foot is rarely explained by a single structure acting alone.

It is also worth noting that many people have structural variations in their feet and remain completely pain-free. Imaging frequently shows changes such as heel spurs or joint wear in people with no symptoms at all. Pain is better understood through how tissues are responding to load over time rather than how the foot “looks.”

Feet are adaptable, resilient structures. When symptoms do arise, they are usually related to changes in load, activity levels or recovery rather than something being “wrong” or needing correction.
