đŸŒ· THE HISTORICAL FOUNDATION OF MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS đŸŒ·

Mother’s Day is more than flowers, gifts, and social media posts. It is a celebration deeply rooted in love, sacrifice, peace, and appreciation for mothers and caregivers whose influence shapes families, communities, and nations.
The modern observance of Mother’s Day was officially established in the United States in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a national holiday dedicated to honoring mothers.

The campaign for this recognition was championed by Anna Jarvis, a devoted daughter who sought to commemorate the life and sacrifices of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis.

📜 Key Historical Milestones

✅ First Official Celebration – 1908
Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother’s Day memorial service on May 10, 1908, at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, in honor of her late mother.

✅ National Recognition – 1914

After years of advocacy and public campaigns, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother’s Day a national celebration in the United States on May 9, 1914.

✅ Original Purpose

The day was originally intended to encourage children and families to express sincere love, gratitude, and respect to their mothers. The white carnation flower became a symbol of purity, love, and remembrance.

✅ A Call for Peace Before Mother’s Day

Even before Anna Jarvis’ campaign, activist and poet Julia Ward Howe issued a passionate appeal in 1870 for a “Mother’s Day for Peace,” calling on mothers to unite against war and violence.

✅ International Adoption

Over time, many countries including Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, and others adopted the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, while some nations combined it with their own traditional celebrations such as the UK’s

“Mothering Sunday.”

⚠ Anna Jarvis’ Later Disappointment
Interestingly, Anna Jarvis later became deeply disappointed with the commercialization of Mother’s Day. She believed the excessive focus on cards, flowers, and profit had overshadowed the true meaning of honoring mothers with genuine love and appreciation.

Today, Mother’s Day remains a powerful reminder that mothers are the backbone of society — nurturing values, faith, discipline, compassion, and resilience in generations.

💐 On this special occasion, I take the opportunity to celebrate and wish my lovely mother, Major (Rtd.) Mrs. Comfort Badu, abundant joy, divine health, peace, and long life.

Mummy, your sacrifices, discipline, wisdom, prayers, and unwavering love have been a great source of strength and inspiration to me and many others. Your life of service, motherhood, and dedication continues to leave a lasting legacy.
May God richly bless and preserve you.
Happy Mother’s Day to you and to all wonderful mothers around the world! ❀đŸŒč
