🤫 Here’s the true story of how soap removes dirt…

🤨 Most of what we consider dirt are greasy substances that are not easily dissolved in water.

🫧 And that’s where soap comes in…

🫧 A soap molecule is shaped a bit like a tadpole with a tail that is non-polar (attracted to oil) and heads that are polar (attracted to water)

🫧 When soapy water come in contact with dirt, the tails of the soap molecule attach to the dirt, while the heads are pulled out into water. This breaks dirt apart.

🫧 And then, soap molecules arrange themselves into tiny spheres called micelles with the dirt trapped in the center along with the tails and only the heads facing outward along with the water.

🫧 This allows it to float and be dissolved and washed away with water, carrying the dirt along with it. 

🫧 The second thing soap does, is it reduces the surface tension of water. When soap is added to water, it loosens the bonds of attraction between water molecules basically making water behave more fluid. So it can spread out more easily and get into crack and crevices to remove dirt.
