To the Family of Dr. Andualem Dagne,

It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we, the members of the Department of Surgery at Addis
Ababa University, write to express our deepest condolences on the tragic and untimely death of Dr.
Andualem Dagne. His sudden and violent passing, caused by a bullet injury while he was on his way
from the hospital where he dedicated his life to saving others, is an unimaginable loss. This senseless act
of violence has not only robbed a family of a beloved son, husband,father, brother, or friend but has also
deprived the medical community of a brilliant, compassionate, and highly skilled surgeon.
Dr. Andualem was among the first batch of subspecialty trainees in HPB at the Department of Surgery,
the School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University. His commitment to his
profession, his relentless pursuit of knowledge, and his dedication to improving his skills were evident to
all who had the privilege of working alongside him. During his training at Tikur Anbessa Hospital, he
demonstrated humility, intelligence, and an unwavering ethical commitment to his patients and
colleagues. His loss is not just the loss of one individual; it is the loss of countless patients who would
have benefited from his expertise, the loss of colleagues who admired and respected him, and the loss of a
future leader in the field of surgery.
We strongly condemn this heinous act of violence, which has taken the life of such an exceptional
individual. This is not merely the murder of a single person; it is an assault on the entire medical
community, on the patients who relied on his care, and on the values of humanity and professionalism
that Dr. Andualem embodied. We call upon the concerned authorities to take immediate and decisive
action to bring the perpetrator(s) of this crime to justice. Such acts of violence against healthcare
professionals, who are discharging their duties to serve society, must not be tolerated. The repeated
occurrence of such incidents, without adequate accountability, is deeply troubling and demands urgent
attention.
Dr. Andualem’s life was a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and compassion. He spent
years honing his skills and knowledge to become the exceptional surgeon and human being he was. His
loss is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the need to protect those who dedicate themselves to the
service of others. We mourn not only the loss of a colleague but also the loss of a bright future that held
so much promise for advancing healthcare in Ethiopia.
To Dr. Andualem’s family, we extend our deepest sympathies. We cannot begin to fathom the depth of
your grief, but please know that we share in your pain and stand with you during this difficult time. To
the medical community, let us honor Dr. Andualem’s memory by continuing his legacy of excellence,
compassion, and unwavering commitment to our profession.
May Dr. Andualem’s soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory inspire us to strive for a world
