Head lice are most commonly found in warm areas close to the scalp, especially:

• Behind the ears
• Nape of the neck (hairline at the back)
• Crown/top of the head
• Along the hairline

These areas provide the perfect warmth for lice to live and lay eggs (nits).

You may also notice:
- Itching or irritation
- Tiny white or brown eggs attached to hair strands
- Small crawling insects on the scalp

Head lice spread through direct contact, not because of hygiene or cleanliness.

Here’s the real breakdown:

1. Head-to-head contact (most common)
Lice crawl from one person’s hair to another when heads are close together—playing, hugging, selfies, or leaning in.

2. Sharing personal items
They can spread through items that touch the hair, such as:
• Hairbrushes & combs
• Hats & caps
• Hair ties & clips
• Headphones
• Towels

3. Close living spaces
Sleepovers, shared pillows, or lying on the same couch/bed can occasionally transfer lice.

Important to know:
• Lice do NOT jump or fly
• They crawl quickly
• Anyone can get lice; it’s not about being “clean” or “dirty”

Signs Someone Has Lice
• Itchy scalp
• Feeling something moving in hair
• Red bumps or sores on scalp
• Difficulty sleeping (lice are more active at night)
• Nits (white/grey eggs) stuck to hair that don’t flick off like dandruff

What Are Head Lice?

Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are small, wingless insects that live only on the human scalp. They are about the size of a sesame seed to a grain of rice and survive by feeding on small amounts of blood from the scalp. Head lice live, breed, and lay their eggs (nits) in human hair.

Head lice are very common, particularly among primary school children, due to close contact during play and daily activities. However, head lice do not discriminate, anyone can get lice, including adults, teachers, and grandparents.

Head lice are persistent and can be difficult to remove, but they are not dangerous, do not spread disease, and are not related to poor hygiene. Having head lice is not a sign of dirty hair when in fact, lice can live in both clean and dirty hair.

Although head lice are not medically harmful, they can cause significant discomfort. Symptoms may include an itchy scalp, irritation, difficulty sleeping, and trouble concentrating at school. Constant scratching can sometimes lead to open sores on the scalp, which may become infected and require medical treatment if left untreated.

Early detection and proper removal are the best ways to prevent lice from spreading within families and schools.

If your child is constantly scratching their head, especially behind the ears and at the back of the neck, it may be lice.
