AMC Bio is developing a novel Precision Viral Persistence (PVP) test for Long COVID. An objective test for viral persistence in a defined subset of Long COVID patients will provide biological validation to patients, identifying who may benefit from targeted antiviral treatment.

400 Million people have suffered from Long COVID (LC) since the onset of the COVID pandemic. Even now, 75 million LC patients experience profoundly disabling symptoms like pain, fatigue, postexertional malaise, cognitive dysfunction, dysautonomia, sleep disturbance among others. Without the benefit of a validated LV viral persistence diagnostic test, Long COVID patients also suffer from considerable stigma, having their symptoms minimized, psychologized and mis-attributed to anxiety.

The AMC Bio PVP Long COVID test will provide substantial benefits for Long COVID patients, improving understanding, acceptance and treatment. Confirmed diagnosis of viral persistence will help patients not only in navigating healthcare, but also with insurers, employers, disability services, and even with their own family members.

Why are women 3x more likely than men to get Long COVID when men are more likely to suffer and die from severe Acute COVID?

More than 6 years after the start of the global COVID pandemic we now know that women are up to three times (3X) higher risk of Long COVID while men are more susceptible to severe acute SARS-CoV-2 (COVID). Lifestyle and pre-existing conditions offer a partial explanation; a lot is hardwired to gender.

DNA: Women’s double XX chromosomes mount a heightened immune defense against acute COVID where men's XY chromosomes don't. The RNA gene Xist expressed by women at the acute COVID phase – again linked to the XX s*x chromosomes – primes for subsequent Long COVID autoimmune conditions.

Hormones: Estrogen provides additional immune protection for women while Testosterone in men predisposes men to higher viral loads. The peak in Long COVID cases among women in mid-life may relate to lower estrogen (perimenopause and menopause). Testosterone, which tends to suppress immune response for Acute COVID in men, may in turn protect men from Long Covid.

Differential Inflammatory Responses: Men have a much higher tendency to inflammation during COVID - the “Cytokine Storm” seen in severe COVID cases that may cause severe damage to critical organ systems and also explains higher COVID mortality rates in men. Women tend to generate a more robust, steady - yet less inflammatory - initial immune response to COVID. This reduces severity at the initial, acute phase of COVID, yet may lead to “exhausted T-cells,” increasing vulnerability to Long COVID.
